  • There are two different standards (JIS and ISO) but you will probably get away with it. Definitely worth checking if something from the parts bin fits.

  • Picture of crank set.

    Rings are: 48, 38, 28
    Crank length: 170 mm

  • Thanks ! I will try and salvage the ones that are on there, if i can find a NDS crank in the parts bin at my local shop. If not i will give you a shout on this. Cheers.

  • Ok mate. No rush

  • Pedals were grumbling. Took them to bits. No idea what I'm doing- seemed to make sense. Will add grease and reassemble with new bearings, maybe. I'll try clean up the platforms with the dremel too.

  • It's impressive (and a little unsettling) that you can realise you need 5/32" ball bearings and grease at 9:30pm and have them delivered to your desk before lunch the following day.

  • Oh nice work on the pedals

  • I’m enjoying this restoration, nice to something done with love and elbow grease. Makes a change from the look at how much money I spent threads.

  • Thanks for the support:)

Two objectives really - spend as little as possible and keep as many original parts as possible. They go hand in hand ! I'm getting very excited about getting this back together.

The plan for this weekend is to do something with the wheels - they are pretty grotty and all the spokes seem to have a 'skin' peeling off them. Will take a close look at hubs too. Wish I knew what 'take a close look at hubs' actually involves - we will figure it out as we go.

  • Learned how to do a hub service yesterday at London Bike Kitchen and trying it solo today in my living room. Things are looking good!

  • Hubs serviced. Cranks and pedals on. Just cleaning up the brakes and will mount.

  • Seems the rear rear wheel is a 6speed but I was expecting a 5 speed as originally fitted.

    To do:
Fit brake levers, cables and set up
Fit DT shifters, cables and set up
    Bar tape
    Buy chain and fit
    Buy saddle ('period' suggestions welcome!)
    Clean and ride

    Really falling for this bike!

  • Love it.
I vote for cork bartape and a rolls saddle.
Then panniers and roll away into the horizon.

  • 'period' suggestions welcome!

Avocet Touring II saddle? I know jankees love them and it’s french!

  • Thanks for the saddle suggestions - still not sure where to go there. Did decide to fit black brake cables this evening (it was a toss up between white, black and lemon) but figured this can be changed later if I fancy it. Good bit of polish applied to various cockpit items. As a Scotsman, tonight's football isn't all that interesting.

  • Any suggestions on how to bring these brake lever bungs back to black? I tried soapy water, and I tried pledge and still nothing.

  • I know this sounds strange but some car guys swear by peanut butter. The oil in the butter soaks back into the plastic turning it black again. Usually used on car trim but don't see why it won't work here.

  • Failing that, silicon based plastic renovator should work. It's doesn't last unfortunately.
I now want to try the peanut butter thing though

  • Or treat yourself to brand new alloy ones...

  • Alas the peanut butter doesn't last forever either. It works very much like the silicon stuff, just a bit cheaper!

  • @Dexter will give the peanut butter a shot as probably some in the cupboard. Failing that, @veLLo those alloy ones will do the job at about the same price as some silicone cleaner! Thanks both.
