So I've got this set of nice compact 26mm bars and this Nitto Dynamic stem, and of course I can't get the stem around the bars' bends.
So my questions are:
- has anyone ever made a list of quill stems known to work well with compact bars?
- or a list of short reach bars known to work well with a 'traditional' quill stem?
I don't want to go down the Deda Murex road just yet, beside it's hard to find it in polished silver.

It's all about technique, you just need to use a coin.

Both are replaceable.
Charlie the bike monger is brilliant and he'll even replace it for you if you mail him the freewheel.
They're quite simple to rebuild by yourself too. Remove lock ring and you should be able to slide the bearing and teeth out from the body.
Remove the snap ring/circlip holding the bearing in place, then flip around the body, rest the bearing on top and and tap it out.
Replace, regrease and reassemble, took me about 15 minutes max.

Cheers - Looks like Charlie's out of stock, but these instructions explain it all.
The cog is called the "outer", as it comprises the main housing of the whole assembly and is hence quite a bit to replace. Charlie charges £55.

Where would be a good place to get German lessons in London? I grew up in a German speaking country, so have a decent grounding, but would like to have an evening a week to develop my vocab and try to wrap my head around the various tenses.

Pre-2008 your local authority may well have run affordable evening Adult Education classes.
Does the Goethe Institute run language classes? -

Can vouch for City Uni courses; I took two years' French there and it was brilliant. Don't know about German (other than being German) but I know they have good tutors and materials.

55 is about right. It was 30ish when I bought a 19T from him about 2 years back.
Even Shimano prices have gone up by quite a bit since...

Cool thanks

Go to the Goethe-Institut. Pricey, but especially with you having specific requirements, they're bound to have a class that does what you need.

Can I use a Tiagra triple front mech with a Deore M590 Triple front crankset?
-
• #92218
I'll try that then. Thanks!

Not quite the same, but I'm using Claris mech, XT chainset for a double set up.
It mostly works, though it takes a bit of getting used to the need to trim the mech a lot. As the road mech is designed for greater diameter rings, I'm not sure it works optimally with the 40/28 options I have.
In the past, I got decent results from a Tiagra triple with MTB cranks from 1993 in a 46/36/24 configuration. -

Saw a nice looking commuting bike last night and remembered what I thought was the brand name "Source" but googling for that brings up nothing. Had a Brixton Cycles sticker on it but that could just be because the owner lives near there, their website doesn't list those bikes (despite the 404 error on their bikes page).
Stealth black, straight forks, rim brakes, rack, dérailleur gears, straight bars with ergon grips, felt sturdy and I was surprised at the weight (not as heavy as I had expected).
"Source" (or possibly something else) on the top tube near the stem.
Any ideas? If I see the bike/owner again I'll ask more questions but that's only if I chance upon them again.
[EDIT] Ah, might be the Specialized Source.

Yep, that's the one. They moved on to disc brakes in recent years and not interested in that modern nonsense for a commuter hack.
Pinnacle Neon 1 looks similar too and I could transfer over existing rack/dynohub/etc. Quiche gears would be perfect (current commuter is an ancient Gary Fisher Nirvana with a triple that only ever sees the middle chainring being used). The years of needing something super sturdy for Weeride / Hamax duty have gone.
Since the current commuter is on its way out (interesting creaking noises from it recently) I'll be on the lookout for a medium Spesh Source 2016 or Pinnacle Neon 1 in any sales.

Quiche gears
What does this mean?
-
• #92224
yacf meme. I’ll let Greenbank explain it.
-
• #92225
Actually, it's not really quiche gears as it's 1 x 8.
Quiche gears was some yacf-ers phrase coined for doubles that have a big ring of 42T or smaller. None of this "REAL MEN MUST HAVE A 50T BIG RING" nonsense.
Mostly for long (i.e. Audax length) rides where you'd end up either flitting between big and small rings too often or using all of the gears with awful chainlines.
