Not quite the same, but I'm using Claris mech, XT chainset for a double set up.
It mostly works, though it takes a bit of getting used to the need to trim the mech a lot. As the road mech is designed for greater diameter rings, I'm not sure it works optimally with the 40/28 options I have.
In the past, I got decent results from a Tiagra triple with MTB cranks from 1993 in a 46/36/24 configuration. -
I think I have a bnib deore triple mech you can have for not much
