  • If England qualify for it, making the knockout round of 16 will feel like an achievement..

If Germany make the knockout round of 32 it will feel like an achievement.

  • If England win tomorrow, having gained 9 points in the group stage expectations will be sky high, with inevitable disappointment to follow.

If England lose tomorrow, it will have been a blessing in disguise, in to the "easier" side of the draw. Expectations will be sky high, with inevitable disappointment to follow.

  • Very true.

Uruguay and Croatia are the only two sides with 100% records and Belgium or England could join them. Winning today would blast expectations into orbit. Pundits have been clever to hedge and suggest that it would be better to lose ignoring the fact that if England win, it might be because Belgium contrived to lose.

  • This is fantastic:

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/28/the-south-korean-players-who-sent-germany-crashing-out-of-the-world-cup

Fans of Mexico, which secured a place in the next round due to South Korea’s win, mobbed random Koreans on the street and expressed their gratitude. Cheering fans in Mexico City gathered outside the South Korean embassy, with one diplomat reportedly taking a shot of tequila with supporters.

On social media, fans depicted Kim in the style of a Mexican saint, created mashups of the South Korean and Mexican flags and digitally added the Korean flag to El Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City.

One Mexican restaurant in California announced a 25% discount for customers of Korean heritage, in honour of their win

  • all those koreans being mercilessly taunted by the team that got in above them more like
talk about rubbing their faces in it

  • Excellent story of the Korean Ambassador to Mexico being called out for tequila shots with Mexican fans

  • Purely because I'm a total gimp, does anyone know of a source of all data for all world cup matches? Including things like players who scored, time they scored, shots on target, etc etc. I have obtained a basic result for every match and built a model using just individual match result data but I'd like to go deeper.

  • opta?

  • five thirty eight?
    data.world?

  • I don't want to pay for it! Guess I'll have to spend the next 4 years building it myself so I'm ready for 2022

  • Well there you go.
    What are you after?
    https://opendata.stackexchange.com/questions/12755/any-open-data-sets-for-the-football-world-cup-in-russia-2018-any-open-data-fo

    What are you after?
    Goals scored
    Goal scorer
    Assists
    Yellow and red
    number of fouls

all that requires people watching the games...

  • Its quite a nice thing to have somebody on your team who can make the whole crowd, opposition fans included, gasp and applaud with the pass of the ball.

  • There's a wormhole of repos from that link but no full historic set by the looks of it.

I guess I'm after as much as I can get, I don't really have a commercial goal, nor do I have a definitive personal goal, I personally would just like to be able to answer any random thought that comes in my head. Eg yesterday I wanted to answer the question, "has there been a world cup where no team has scored the maximum number of available points in the group stages?" - Yes, 4 World Cups - and then off the back of that I wanted to know how often a World Cup winner scores max points in group stages - not often.

  • Things like that will be out there/buildable. Things like "how often has someone conceeded a free kick 20 metres from goal, the player has been sent off, the person who has been fouled, steps up and slots it home, wins the world cup" might be a little more tricky.

Also: if you're here, can you go to the VBA thread and point out why I'm thick? ta.

  • Maybe try the guardian?

  • Last chance to board the 'It's Coming Home' train today before it catastrophically derails

  • The way it stands England and Belgium could draw (so neither side loses momentum) and the team with the worst disciplinary record would go through second which could be an easier route.

We may see our 3rd choice keeper come on upfront in the 90th minute with instructions to get sent off ...

  • Like Germany playing their "Keeper Forward" position at the end of their game.

  • That would be an amazing way to get your one and only international cap.

  • I’d love it if Senegal, Colombia and Japan could all qualify for the next round.

  • Solidarity, something something something.
