Triple work well, I just like a dedicated chainset where shifting likely to be optimised with the correct ramp and pin, especially off road.
46/30 with standard ring work cause it’s the smallest I can go with a normal road front derailleur, any smaller mean the derailleur won’t wrap round the chainring well and the angle of the cable (as it set much lower to the B.B.) likely to affect the shifting feedback.
Why not a bodged triple? Chainline?
Am installing this in front of TV tonight
Edit: bollocks, no I'm not, just realised I forgot to buy single ring bolts or bodge washers
