Depending on the model this is a free warranty fix. Search the thread back a few pages, I had mine repaired

damn, my macbook is 3.5 years old thus too old for the warranty replacement :(
-

Yeah, my brother just had his repaired for free.
If it’s within the repair window, I would flag it up and try to get the repair. If it all goes well fine. If there are any complications or it is out with the recall dates, I would return it or ask for money off.
I had one that got progressively worse over time.

You're in luck! Free replacement period has been extended to 4 years from the model discontinue date - so you should be okay. Call Apple or do a live chat and book an appt at your local genius bar.

I've got a Genius Bar appt this Friday; the recall period for the 2013 models ends in July, so I am scraping in but hoping it will be replaced. From what I've heard, they do a full shakedown of the machine and replace other bits with issues gratis at the same time. Not getting my hopes up, but I've got my hopes up.

I am due for a new iMac at work under the 5 years cycle scheme we have, but I am about to go on summer holiday for a couple of months, back in mid Sept. Should I put in a request now so there is a new machine waiting for me when I get back OR shall I put in a request when I get back, so nothing will happen until probably end of Oct, but I might get a new model as Apple usually introduce new models around Sept / Oct?

If you're off on hols and you current machine runs, I'd def wait. Unless you can swing getting a pro

current machine is magically still pretty fast, it's a 2011 model, so should have been replaced at the 5 years mark, but manager is a fucking dick and he has been hoarding a few of those wishing that a few old iMac could be swapped for a new Pro. I am new ish to this team but not the university, so he kind of just gave me an old machine from the cupboard when I started...
Anyway, no, it won't be a pro, it will be a like for like... and he has no reason to hoard anymore as we have just been given a go ahead to buy 10 new pros, not for staff obvsiously...

Does anyone have experience with data recovery or directory repair tools such as DiskWarrior or Disk Drill? Got an external drive with 1.5TB of data on which won't mount, so disk Utility can't repair it. Done a scan with the free version of Disk Drill and the data's there, so wondering whether to upgrade so I can recover it - or whether DiskWarrior's partition wizardry is the better approach.
-
• #12962
Please use a non-editing recovery tool (there are many, Disk Drill looks like it will not write to the drive). Avoid using a disk repair tool like Disk Warrior unless you've exhausted all other options. Obvs recover to a brand new drive, which should be formatted when the damaged drive is physically disconnected. If the data you're recovering is important, clone the damaged drive and then recover from the clone to a new drive, keeping the original in a safe place.

And when you're done, put in place a backup process*, and test it!

Could someone please hook me up with a Snow Leopard .dmg? I'm looking for 10.6.0...
Gf's A1278 MBP was on its last legs, took her dead, bloated battery out, chucked my old 8Gb RAM sticks in, replaced her trackpad with mine, tried to update the OS and now it won't start up... Bah... Not backed up, gonna try and chuck Snow Leopard on and see if that works, if not Target mode once I can get a cable to do the job and replace the HD with an SSD... Not easy to find a 9 pin Firewire cable these days... :|

Why does ‘files’ always open automatically when I liven up my iPad? I can’t find a setting for this, even if I close the app it re opens when I wake the iPad.

I've got a 10.6 dmg I made from the DVD, I used it often during my A1278 days (even made a small recovery partition with it!). Also have TRIM support enabler for 10.6 as well. Not sure how to get both to you, I'm located in Perth AU.

Great! Could you wetransfer them to me please? I'm at teenslain@gmail.com...
I'm in 4020, QLD so that's pretty close... :)

PS A Mini Displayport cable won't transfer data between two Thunderbolt devices, will it? Having trouble finding a suitable cable nearby, could do without a trip into Brissy...

Any indication of a new Apple Watch before the end of the year? Considering a Series 3.

• #12971
I've just had my mid 2014 (bought Jan '15) done for the second time, gratis. It's been so nice to have what feels like a brand new machine every couple of years.

@Philip_J_Fry @>>>>>> probably just a quick bike ride between two towns in Australia, right? :)

Disk Utility says the hard drive is OK so looks like a hardware problem... I tried to launch into safe mode and the machine restarted due to a panic...
The battery I took out had swollen up so much that it had cracked the trackpad and was buckling the case, quite possible that me fixing that problem has fucked the machine somewhere else after that pressure was eased.. Oh well, new machine time for the gf...

wetransfer seems to only do up to 2GB, the whole package is 5.2GB. I created a private torrent file for you, check your PMs. It'll probably take a while to transfer, because the NBN rollout in Perth is only to the suburbs in which certain State MPs reside in.
Edit - I replaced my battery in my former A1278 well before the battery swelling...new machine quite likely indeed. Let me know if you still need the 10.6, otherwise I'll take it down.
my screen has this too. is it a problem? never really noticed it affecting me
