The 2026 World Cup in Mexico/USA/Canada with 48 teams will be interesting.
Groups of 3. Top 2 go through to next round. One extra knock out round. Cup winner/runner up will play the same number of games but one extra round of 16 matches to allow for more penalty shoot outs.
The downside is that the games will be BST +5-8 and so later in the day and possibly past midnight. Another issue is that some of us who are elderly may not be alive to watch it.
