  • Looks like 11-36 + 50/34 to me, I'd want a little bit lower for touring.

    It all depends on what kind of touring they're doing (elevation, amount of gear, etc) and how fit they are, so there is no way for us to tell (whether this is the 'right' gearing).

    Like you said, you can only say what you'd prefer. If you're correct, 34x36 low gear seems fine for me personally for most situations.

  • Basically the heavier the bike, the more range you need.

    I tour the Pyrenees on 34t chainring and 32t sprocket on a semi-loaded touring bike, I managed but not without discomfort.

    TL;DR; fit the biggest range possible.
