Looking to turn my bottom spec hardrock into a budget 1x7 groad thing.
Needed:
Single chainset - current one is the riveted boat anchor triple.
Shorter stem and shallow drops.
Is 7sp drop bar shifter a thing?
Better cantis eventually.Current build

Could probably get an 8-speed cassette for like £5? Or is it a screw-on freewheel?
-
• #993
Unsure, given it’s budgetness I’d assume screw-on. Tbh if a cheap lighter wheelset appears I could be tempted if going to 8sp opens up my options.
First step is ditching the chainset I think. -

Any retro-bit collectors have a set of Hope Mono Minis? Looking for the 2004, 180/160 version ideally

Shimano RSX or Tourney, Microshift makes/made some as well I think.

Spam: if anyone is looking for a retro mtb, I’m selling a 19” Saracen Terratrax in classifieds now.

Consider bar ends as well unless you're set on brifters? You can easily do 1×7 with friction shifter if you're into that sort of thing

Found out this exists just now: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/-/32860536002.html
£17 for 8-speed 11-40 - get a £3 road-link off there as well, pair up with a long-cage 9-speed Shimano MTB mech (Deore or something - <£10 if you hunt about?) and 8-speed brifters (I've got some horrible Microshift ones you can have really cheap), find some cranks and a chainring and you've got ultra-budget wide-range 1× for under £50

Now that’s an awesome proposition!
Muchos gracias for spotting all that! -

Just make sure that your rear wheel fits an 8 speed cassette (I think spacing needs to be 135mm for that, but not 100% sure) or find a cheap rear wheel.
Fellow retro mtb lovers, I'm putting my Colnago Master Alloy for sale. PM me if interested.
