Well, in my mind full cable housing will create more friction and cause bigger problems over time with shifting and braking. It is more expensive and more wasteful. It is a bigger faff changing cables and it is a ball ache for the frame builder to construct.
Only real disadvantage for external cables is when frame bags collide with cable routing.

the roads from october to april here are super gritty, wet and salty so i just want something that will protect the metal from corrosion as much as possible.
@TvH - ducting would be best, rather than just holes. Maybe you're right that its a pain in the ass, though if its a mass production frame, who cares?
eh, i always understood that internal cabling kept salt out and added longevity to your functional bike. Have I been misinformed?
