Would people think you are dodgy if you were to buy a house with cash? Not a property that is asking for cash buyers only, but a normal freehold or long lease property.
I don't mean with a suitcase of actual notes, but without a mortgage and you are not an investor?
Also, w0uld paying 100% cash on purchase a reason for knocking the asking price down?
-
• #23989
No and no.
-
• #23990
No and no, but kind of yes for Q2.
If the vendor puts value on a quick sale then cash buyers are attractive. If they stand to loose money from a drawn out conveyancing process (they’re paying mad rent or something) then they may be willing to take a hit on sale price to save time (money) elsewhere.

Your conveyor will ask for proof of the origin of the money. Depending on their style they might convey all kinds of innuendo during this process which could make you wish them ill. If the money came from an inheritance it's pretty easy to prove, if you've squirrelled it away in cash from sewing buttons on gentlemen's coats or blow jobs it will be much more difficult.

Just had our mortgage application approved. Looking to buy a bigger house as the kids will be in their teens soonish. Found a humongous place which is a bit (=totally) too expensive obviously but there's an option to convert part of the ground floor into a small apartment which we would rent out to improve finances. Everything feels terrifying but the sellers haven't had any offers yet which probably means that if you've got the money for a house this size you'd rather live somewhere more posh. We don't as it's close to our current place so no need to change schools etc. Going to put in an offer today, just mentally preparing myself so I'm not too disappointed when nothing works out as we'd hoped...
Tldr: could possibly have space for more bikes soon.

As said, there's a lot of stuff about proving the source of funds nowadays. If the money is coming from overseas (particularly China or Russia or similar) you may have to go to quite some lengths to prove that it isn't dodgy. If you have plenty of documentation to justify where it's from it should be easy enough.
It might not be a reason for knocking the price down but if there are two equal bids yours will probably be the one that is accepted.

The Mrs bought a £300 k house three years ago for cash, no questions asked by the conveyor, or indeed anyone, about the origin of the monies.

She sounds like a keeper!

Did she make a donation to the Tory party at the same time? I hear that helps.

Yeah i wondered about the cash purchase thing a bit when we were buying. The missus and I are both Irish and some of our deposit was in the form of a gift from parents, and we all (me and my parents) had to prove the source of the funds in the form of payslips and a years worth of bank statements.
I joked that they're hassling us for pennies when there are people buying million pound properties in cash with stinking money and no questions are asked.
I hope I'm wrong
I didn't choose those tiles, you cunt...
