  • My Zipp 440 wouldn't even slow down.

  • great fun, but bears no relation to how hubs and bearings will behave under load, e.g. riding your bike.

    dat's the truth......

and bearing drag (mostly seal drag really) on a bike is around a watt IRRC, so improving it a million percent is not something you should waste much time and money on. The seals are there for a reason.....

    Yeah? Well mine speed up.

    Bingo, we have a winner.

yeah there is seal drag, but combine everything, even the work required to flex the chain. And on a geared bike, even more so.
Also under load they'll behave differently, and then there is temperature!

  • I was at a workshop recently where they are working on a device to store energy in a certain application. It involves a spinning mass in a vacuum. Apparently they can get it up to speed and it will still be spinning 24 HOURS later. Insane.

  • when I am riding my bike the wheels keep spinning untill I stop ;)

  • My rear one doesn't always.

  • My New Phil wood rear hub on it's own spins for approx 0.01s, the hub is new as in never used but it's around a year and a half old, can someone help ?!?
the bearings should be fine if they haven't been used, right? so what do I need to replace?
Any ideas will be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Mine were a bit like that - I assume you're exaggerating a little? I don't think they're renowned for their low friction, but they will free up a little with use.

  • Thanks for the reply sparky, unfortunately I'm not exaggerating :( spinning the lcokring is about the same as spinning the body :S it does feel smooth but it just doesn't spin.
i was hoping they would free up, usually with the NOSish hubs you can feel them loosen up after playing with them for a few mins, This one hasn't yet.

  • In that case....

    :(

  • a hub on its own won't spin as what keeps a wheel spinning is the weight

  • I started all my wheels spinning at the beginning of this thread and they are all still going.

  • My Dura ace hub on it's own spins for about 10 secs (and that's with a buggered axle!) and my suntour superbe spins for longer.
As i said my Phil doesn't spin at all.
    someone please help :(

  • Right now mine don't go above 2 spins ... lol

    Have to replace it...

  • *adding fuel to the fire

Don't forget about the weight of the valve.

    kthxbye.

  • turning the bike upside down and one hard spin of the front wheel 6 mins 30 seconds thou my wheels are heavy and dont climb that well.

  • my wheels are heavy and dont climb that well.

As long as they can climb into bed, that's good enough.
