  • GB still considered the best of the metal guards?

Anyone know what the max tyre size you’ll fit inside the 40mm ones is? I’m thinking a 28 will be ok?

I’d probably go for VO again as I have them on another bike but the blurb says 35mm version does up to 25c tyres and the 45mm version for up to 35c tyres. I have the 45mm version and they look ‘baggy’ over 30s, would prefer a closer fit this time.

  • Usually they specify 10 mm space as a rule of thumb. I have 35mm VO guards and I'm on 25 with room to spare. Have yet to try 28s but I think they'll fit nicely.

  • I have 28s under my 40mm GBs, look cracking. Looked fine with 32s too, just need to get the fit just right or they rub slightly.

  • I've just put VO 35mm on over 28mm tyres, no problems at all. Tried over 32s, but that was going too far. There's enough vertical space, have yet to try it in a downpour to see how the spray is.

Should still be better than the years I had 30mm PDW over 28s. Love a close-fitting guard.

Look no further than Honjo, noticeably better quality than anything else by a country mile. Albeit at a significant cost......

Way I look at it though is people will happily spend 100 quid on a saddle, or a set of tyres etc, so why not on guards? They'll last you an awful lot longer than a set of tyres, or say, 10 rolls of bar tape...
