I always feel people who use that Emerson quote never reveal what it is they feel the world is trying to make them. They like the idea that they're out there carving their own path against significant resistance, but can't really define what the resistance is.

It's mainly other people rolling their eyes when they start talking about [ tarot cards / energy / crystals / vacations / etc. ]. Sometimes it's other people asking in a frustrated tone what possible basis they have for their opinion and then groaning when they refer to some cunts YouTube video including references to the illuminati.
