thanks all for the advice. ive bought a swanky carbon sram mtb crankset from ebay. hopefully should be with me middle of next week!
and just to get it rolling while i rebuild the wheels, I've also bought a v cheap 29er wheelset that I'll slap on some 40c schwalbe marathons i have hanging around.
