So I've heard that campagnolo 10spd road shifters will work with sram 10spd rear drs, so I suppose it's possible that the opposite is true as well. As far as any # of speeds outside of 10, not the faintest idea.
FWIW you could always just go friction thumbie. The difficulties of shifting 10spd+ with friction are greatly overstated ime.
