It's got a warning on it, haha - maybe they just keep them hidden away so the "normals" don't get mixed up with niche, weird old parts

Here's one for rim brake enthusiasts -
Magura HS 33 - anyone got any experience?
Thinking about them for my old MTB/city bike.
Are they better than good cantis? Do they fit over mudguards? I've got 60mm berthouds.
My current brakes are fine (trp revox) but wondering if these would be a worthwhile upgrade. I know theyre rather niche, only ever seen them on German city bikes. -

I found HS33 to perform better than older MTB cantis (don't have much experience with newer ones, sorry) even after 10+ years of not bleeding them or anything. Will measure clearance tonight.

HS33 rim cracking powers :)
Still available, still have spares back up.
Trials riders would scuff up the rim brake surface and smear with tar for proper light switch performance (on or off, instant lock up performance)
I watched many a crash of first timers as they underestimated the stopping powers of single finger braking having come from 3 finger death grip canti's.rather good braking system, disc's came along and HS33's became over shadowed. Popular with trials riders and i belive the world of tandems too as an instant upgrade over canti power.
The first generation of XTR v-brakes.
Lots of legal action in the Americas.
To cut down getting sued for making too powerful a brake (yes really) Shimano added a powerwave adjuster to the brake lever. Hi or Lo settings. The brakes where shipped set in "Lo" power and a plastic widget jammed in the mech. So to unleash full power you had to remove the widget, undo a bolt, manually set to "Hi" do locking bolt back up, so any full power crashes where caused by the "rider" and not the brake. Rider error, hard to sue for that. -

Seeing as we're among friends, I may as well say I've never used:
- a press-fit BB
- a headset wider than normal 1 1/8
- thru axles
- tubeless tyres
- a press-fit BB

Pressfit BB seems to be the bane of mechanics. Not interested, maybe if a dedicated racer.
Motorbikes use 1" why do i need 1.5" for a bicycle ?
Thru axles, only 2omm on the zocchi bombers, and Specialized used to do a semi thru axle Skraxle or Stout, that was good.
Tubeless....... so you need a tube if you gash a tyre, oh and burping......i think i may be falling into retrogrouch :)

I've got them also. Nice maintenance-free system really. Getting them positioned properly during installation can be a bit of a pain as you're trying to adjust height and distance from rim at the same time but once setup you don't really have to do anything with them. Definitely better than cantis but on my bike XT V-brakes with compressionless housing is better. Perhaps just need to adjust my Maguras though.

Rim brakes r ace. Would never build a traditional road race bike with discs. Such ugly, very faff. But then road riding is a bit shit, so I'm unlikely to wear out a rim any time soon.
As for off-road, have had both HS33s in the correct fluoro colour (which are still very much in use on my old Saracen, being taken care of by a friend) and XTR parallel push Vs. Good times

While I’m a big fan of hs33s, in good conditions I do still prefer a canti.
The pads on a mag have to be set about as close to the rim as a v brake so not so tolerable of a buckled wheel or mud.
A mate who’s given up trials riding recently gave me a big bag of HS33 bits. I should really get around to piecing together a brake or two.

When I was a kid I used to go the local MTB specialist to look at bikes we couldn't afford. I remember squeezing HS33 rear brakes just to watch the seatstays bend. /csb

Pressfit BB seems to be the bane of mechanics.
When they allow bike manufacturers to cut the costs associated with machining tolerances, production consistency and qc who care what the mechs think.
It's just sad that the punter gets sucked into this and thinks they need the latest pressfit yada yada and this then trickles down to the low volume custom bicycle manufacturer, who cannot reap the benefits of cheaper mass production having to adopt the standards too just be current or 'on trend'.

Wasn't sure where to post this (considered Hacks/bodges).
The bike has flexible fork blades so the v brake posts flexed outward unacceptably without the brake booster. I had to drill out the center hole of the booster to fit the front rack through it. It's a custom fork so I should have not been such a cheapskate and just got the brazed on centrepulls...
Anyway now it works pretty well, most of the flex is in the brake arms so I might look to upgrade from the Avid SD3s to late model XTs - am I kidding myself this will make a difference?
I also have some CX70 cantis to try but that can wait until I have to change the bar tape anyway. -

Anyone want to take a punt on a €9 coaster hub? There are 16/20/24/36 hole options on that website. I feel like on a 16h coaster hub you'd rip your heads/nipples clean off in one go. Both in terms of your spokes and your human body. But it'd be so very worth it if you recorded it in slomo.
Edit: ah postage may be prohibitive to the UK

Took me a while to see anything in your photo then I saw the booster. Had to read what you'd written before I noticed the rack threading it's way through.

Having a bit of a dilema with my mtbs right now.
Currently got the Kona klunker with just the coaster brake...
and a Surly 1x1 with a mullet disc front, canti rear set up.
I was going to go back to canti front and rear on the Surly but then I started thinking that the Kona might be quite fun with some proper brakes back on it, technical riding is
quite trickypretty much impossible with just a coaster rear and the Surly is like a 20" frame so not exactly chuckable whatever the brake set up.So, half of me wants to put the coaster wheel on the Surly and dics f&r on the Kona but then the other half says htfu with the coaster brake and keep the Kona as is and have the Surly as an awesome 90's double canti beast.
-
• #45
Infact, I think looking at that picture has just convinced me, to put discs on the Kona would mean getting rid of the snowflake 27.5" front wheel and having a clutter of cables. I just can't do it.
Canti going back on the front of the Surly asap!
-
• #46
And then get a 3rd mtb, right?
-
• #47
V-brakes/retro Maguras on your Surly maybe just for something different? Or swap both wheels onto it and stay klunky?
-
• #48
I've just manged to cut one road bike out the fleet, I don't need to be replacing it!
I have occasionally thought about sticking £4k+ worth of current model year full suss, 1x11, double hydro disc brake mountainbike on finance but I always come to the conclusion that if I go to the garage and have to choose between riding that, the Hummus or the 1x1, I'd have wasted £4k.

I tried Vs on the Surly, there wasn't enough of an improvement in power to justify the negatives for me. #cantifanboy

Ah right. I'm shocked by how good XT parallel push + compressionless housing is every time I use them. Got them for £5.
Your's sounds better than ours if they have coaster brakes! Or maybe I've just not been looking in the right drawers!
