• If only there was some way of indicating on the diagram the bits you are talking about

  • Maybe a very small micrometer for the depth, you could use the bottom of a Vernier for the thickness (if I have understood it right)

  • You could use something like a small bolt to space out calipers to measure the bead hook thickness. Anything of known size would do.

  • These are about a quid on eBay

"dental thickness gauge" or something along those lines

  • What is this? A polo mallet for ants?

  • lol I'm not the best at drawing I'll admit

  • That 2mm bead hook thickness and the 3mm depth

Dimension 3 is easy enough to measure, you can get close enough with the depth feature on most Vernier or digital calipers. If you want to nail it down very precisely, a depth micrometer probably with a blade rather than a flat point, e.g. Starrett 449MAZ-75R

Dimension 2 is tricky because there's no clear flat or edge to reference, but you should be able to get some idea with a groove micrometer such as a Mitutoyo 146-121

It's worth noting that my drawing is based on the Mavic UST dimensioned drawings issued in the Open Pro UST press kit. Dimension 1 is 0.6mm, dimension 2 is 1.74mm from the OD of the rim to the point where the fillet under the hook is tangent to the side wall, and dimension 3 is 5.2mm. The hook can be bigger than my drawing, but not smaller.

Anyone tried finish line tubeless sealant? Does it actually do what it says on the tin? i.e. not dry out and seal better than latex sealants without fibers?

  • It's in my marathon supreme at the moment, and fine but not been called into use that I'm aware of. My mate had some in some voyager hypers, wouldn't seal an awkward cut but stans did the next day.

  • I've just bought a litre of it, but haven't used it yet. It's only just become available, so I think only @snottyotter has actual experience of using it.

  • Is it just me or does Gorilla tape absolutely stink? I can smell it from across the room. Bizarre.

Anyway I'm going to join the ranks of the tubeless, seems like a good time now that the Finish Line stuff is available. How much sealant do I need for 6 wheels?

Edit: 80-140 ml per wheel depending on volume apparently. This isn't going to be cheap

  • Mtbr reckoned it was terrible

  • It's not been getting great reviews so far. I'd maybe hold off a bit longer for some more testing.

  • I had it in one set of tires, transferred to a new set last week (goopy). Compared to Orange it's more viscous, I doubt anyone's had it long enough to know if it dries out eventually.

I reckon the drying out depends on whether you have a good seal. I opened some tires after over a year with Orange and it was still fluid - posted a pic upthread somewhere. Can't comment on sealing ability - never had an issue with Orange and haven't been on FL long enough to compare.

With the tire swap I used up this 8oz bottle of Finish Line and I still have half a bottle of Orange. If I do another set of tires, I'll just use the Orange rather than buying more FL.

  • Sounds like it’s worth avoiding.. at least until it’s been more thoroughly proven - or unproven as the case may be.

  • I'd say it's not worth paying a significant premium for, at this stage. I wouldn't avoid it. YMMV

  • Sounds like it’s worth avoiding.

It is. I tried using it for the first time last night. Doesn't seal a sodding thing. Utterly, utterly useless.

  • P.S. Anyone want a litre of the stuff? I'll do you a good price...

  • Got the Effetto Mariposa tubeless kit, 250ml of sealant with tape and valves for 30 quid ain't bad. Will report back on quality.

  • Has anyone come up with anything like this in the UK?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxNWiLQKxOs

I would love it if I could get a sprayer that I can use to both clean my bike (I don't have access to a hose or garden) and seat my tyres. That HDX one in the video isn't available in the UK though and I would really like it to be easy to use for both cases (no hose clamping, buying random o-rings, etc.). The one in the video you simply unscrew some bits to convert it from a sprayer to a tyre inflator and it only costs $10.

  • More questions:

    1. Is it possible to use too much rim tape? Got 4 layers on at the moment and it's still not quite seating properly, though my first two layers might have been too narrow.

    2. If you need to use a boot, how in the name of god are you going to reseat the tyre out on the road? I am just barely managing with a track pump.

PS. No pingy snappy noise when I blast them with the track pump. Is that bad? These are bodgy non-tubeless rims - ghetto tubeless or whatever you want to call it.

  • Yes just use the right width once and c02

  • Just bought this. I think I might be able to fix big tubeless tyre holes without having to remove the tyre. If it doesn't I'll have to buy a broken boat and fix that.

  • No idea

Your rim is not made for this, so won’t have any kind of bead lock. This is pretty much the equivalent to asking why a mechanical groupset won’t work with Di2 cables.

Is this intended for use at road pressure?

  • 650b×42 so lower pressure. Does the ghetto conversion only work for MTB wheels or something?
