Many of the racers in these races do carry a small cafe lock or something. And often end up not using it much, as you usually only leave the bike briefly, you can see it through a window or take it in with you.
I’ve given up taking one. Left my bike outside supermarket in Italy last year, but that was really the only risky time. And it was fine.
