Does strike me that it may have been a marketing ploy. Sure they might lose a bit of cash on these few orders, but might lead to overall sales increasing as people trawl their site looking for more mistakes, not to mention telling all their friends the 'great deals they got on SJS'

Could be. It certainly hasn't done their image any harm by honouring the orders.
It would also be a pretty risky tactic, I could have very easily ordered the lot and kept quiet, then they'd be out of pocket and have no 'marketing' to show for it. For that reason alone seems unlikely.
