  • Came across this thread on a BMW V10 swap into a Lotus Exige, so thought I'd share/save for later reading.

    Pretty impressive body extension.

    Before/After:

  • Question from a friend- he’s been asked to set up an engine dyno and train the new owners on how to use it, what’s a reasonable figure for him to charge per day for this?

  • Lots of overweight racists from the Midlands I know if run methanol/water injection on our engine, which is very cheap bang for buck as long as you've got suitable pipework and intercooler, which you/i do. The thing that put me off was that you needed to have a tank of terrifying flame water somewhere in the car. I've seen donut tanks in the spare wheel bay, which is what tim has, but it's still very close to any children in the back. Did also think of putting one in the bulkhead, which is a long way from anyone, plus not inside cab, but then the volume is so low it would be a total pain. You could run without meth, but then map would be fucked, so would need switch to kill pump, which would burn out if empty, and spare ecu to switch between.

@Dammit keeps saying about Methanol injection, I have no qualms about this system, plenty of people used them in R53 and R56 Mini tuning, however, and my concern here relies on no real concrete knowledge so happy to be told otherwise, water/meth injection doesn't increase power alone, it allows you to turn the boost up and not have to worry about increased IATs and detonation, but if my turbo is already running fairly large boost and coping OK, then turning the boost up, regardless of if I can do it safely, isn't going to make it more driveable, it's just going to make it have a bigger peak number.

  • Meh, it's just discussion, I haven't got the money to make it faster at the moment, but it's interesting for me. I appreciate that others might be insanely bored of hearing about it, so I apologise. WRT buying a V8 rwd estate, I'm not keen at the moment, and I'm in no rush to sell the Volvo, spending money on cars isn't something I do with a clear end goal in mind, it's something I do because I like modifying cars and I enjoy the journey and the progression. Not doing that and saving the money instead is quite an alien concept to me.

  • That's why I was talking about a bigger turbo but also newer technology, so that the power curve is better than it is currently. EFR turbos, the new GTX turbos, Holsets, they're all newer and much better tech than a 20 year old design td04.

  • It lowers the risk of detonation, but also cools the charge and increases density, boosting engine mass flow and power, no? Though thinking about it that may depend on fuel metering etc.

  • Black hides all sins.

  • Meth does everything that Thrust Vector said, which essentially means you can run a load more timing without blowing everything up. So more power for the same boost, basically. Meth is something like 114 octane, much higher than pump fuel.

  • I have been reading about mechanical (solid) lifters vs hydraulic. In other news I’m highly sought after at parties.

  • Anyone know a work around for putting an abs system into "basic" (locked open) without the dealer Tool?
Done the mother of all bleeds, forwards, backwards, pressure, vacuum. Nothing clears the sinking pedal. Has to be a big fat lump of air locked inside the abs pump manifold

  • Mrs Hammer just poured 250ml of engine oil into the power steering reservoir because it said ‘oil only’ on the lid. Only called me because more wouldn’t fit. Fingers crossed the RAC will recover her for free but I have a feeling this is going to be expensive...
On that note, any recommended BMW garages in the Woodford area?

  • Classic. Shouldn't be an expensive fix, it won't do any damage. They'll just flush it and refill I suspect.

  • my pal just put wiper fluid in the fuel tank of his 964...

  • She reckons the RAC will fix at roadside, so fingers crossed. Renewal is in 4 days and I wasn’t going to bother..!

  • Amazing.

Should do, they normally only charge for incorrect fuel or accidents, could even possibly flush and replace the fluid themselves for the cost of the fluid.

  • vows?

  • You beat me to it.

  • Supposed to be some ethanol content in wiper fluid, could do him a favour. Maybe not the water mixed in with it.

  • After much debate and a few hours of waiting, turns out they can't fix it at the roadside so she's being recovered, probably after a further lengthy wait. They also charge for 'driver induced faults', so that's £100 gone immediately!

  • My father once poured screen wash into the hydraulic fluid reservoir of his Citroen BX.

  • Sorry, didn't read what was going on properly. Was blinded by Neil silver car/cat with a boat chat. Speak to Tim, he was always quite dismissive of the terror of Neil's car, and having been in his, he has set it up in a much more progressive fashion.

  • "Terror"

haha I do need to speak to him relatively soon so I'll discuss it with him.

  • I did take some big boy pics on holiday too:
