I don’t know if people have short memories but Froome’s sudden transformation from a crash-prone domestique who was about to be fired to a multiple GT winner was a mystifying and quite ugly affair, and Cound was part of that, along with him stealing friend’s rabbits to feed his python, the bilharzia excuses, the ‘crazy adaptive physiology’ that he had as Vaughters put it, the testing in Aigle that was supposed to prove his hidden potential all along.
It’s a bit like when I called Bouhanni a dickhead and we had several pages debating whether it was racist. Cound put herself in the public eye, at the centre of the debate, got into an ugly spat with Cath Wiggins, all at a time when we were all scratching our heads where this talent came from. It was messy and very bad PR, and calling her on it isn’t being sexist.
