  • Apparently the Houndslow & District 100 was abandoned today when a drink driver flipped his car and almost hit a rider.

  • "Weather turned out to be reasonable. Still, mild & dry.

I passed an overturned car at about 2 Miles and guessed the event would be called off. By the time I got back there at 9 Miles they had stopped the race. Driver was pissed and had lost control.

No riders injured. Need to juggle my calendar......again."

I don't mind that. I'm not in favour of dog racing, even if they're taking it easy. But what about clubman's event?

  • gear up a bit

definitely this!! (cycling shoes&pedals will go a long way as well!)

  • gear up a bit

Same advice given to Froome before his stunning Giro recovery... #oof

  • cycling shoes&pedals will go a long way as well

  • n=1

I'm 1hr faster over 100mi using clipless pedals compared to trainers. I don't need to see the physio after each ride either.

  • you misspelt "10" with an extra 0

    Gear up a bit.
Turns out I can, did dig out an old 6spd wheel with freewheel down to 14t, but need to bodge on gear shifter etc etc.
Then I found out you can get 14t freewheels, I thought they stopped at 16t and lower ment getting a BMX hub with driver unit, someone on here has done that down to 9t I think or something close.

  • Porkins has had a crash diet.
    was 10.3kg this morning.
    Now down to 8.9kg.
Potential to loose more, stopped at hacksawing the cartridge brake pad wings off. Just a parts bin swap around, strip all the things........ so as long as I don't snap the chain, get a flat or get thirsty...... :)

Might have another stab in the morning.

  • Went for a quick thrash around.
Steering was a bit different, felt faster, but further forwards.
was able to spin up to 24mph fairly easily, cruising at 20mph felt easier and seat-of-pants not science bike felt quicker off the mark. Dropped the second freewheel off 185g of central mass from back wheel.

Managed to scavenge old bar tape off the aero bars I am not using yet as I am not bendy enough to get down on them and still see where I am going.

  • Then I found out you can get 14t freewheels

Only for small (30mm) BMX hub threads AFAIK, not normal 1.37" threads. Try a 15T fixed sprocket.

  • Glad i didn't buy one yet, was no mention of thread sizes, just Dicta brand.
will investigate deeper, thank you for the tip off on thread size.

Already have a 15t fixed sprocket, would need to practice lots before attempting on fixed as not done it for ages and forget to "keep pedaling" on the main road would be too exciting :)

  • Yes, that's right.
I'd already DNS'd on account of having to look after sick baby.
Was a bit miffed on our 5 am walk when I saw it was a beautiful morning with thunder storm having passed earlier than forecast, but when I heard the news was pleased I hadn't bothered to trek down.
Apparently he was drunk and driving whilst DQ d at 100 mph and tried to overtake someone else on the inside, hit a kerb and flipped.

  • Just rechecked, 14t M30 is only mention of size and fitment, so 30mm hub then.

I know even less about BMXs. Ta for the heads up @mdcc_tester :)

  • At least I've managed to complete one report this weekend, even though it wasn't the right one!

  • You've ridden a 100 wearing trainers? That would certainly be an heroic deed - what was your time?

  • { insert pic of hippy's trainers on Fast Eddies drive }

  • Yes, I hadn't forgotten that episode but I can't remember the outcome.

  • Yeah, made Cycling Weekly Hard Man award.. https://thehippy.net/blog/2010-sccu-100/

  • Lucky I don’t use those silly Speedplay pedals.. 😉

    Ha ha ha.

  • So round 2.

Rollins has been on a crash diet and shed about 1.5kg.
Old school chop and flop bars and aero levers.
Put tyres up to 80psi, normally run around 60psi as roads in town are rougher.

Weather conditions pretty much identical to yesterday, effing hot, dry roads, no wind.
Bit busier with traffic though, suffered some close passes at motorway speeds, the HGV's gave me a proper wide berth though. Can't say the same for the white 7.5t, 3.5t and several cars.

Photo on start line, run down to junction and join A2070.
Listened, waited for silence, zeroed speedo, went for it, road clear, enter, up to 20mph in 17 secs.
Need to be back at this point in 25 mins to be safe to beat yesterdays time.
had a good run up to the two roundabouts.
Checked speedo at 5miles and about 15 mins, so half way.
Having done it twice now I belive there is a very gentle gradient, don't notice it in a car, but the return leg is easier/faster (same road) so must be running with gradient........ ?

  • Check speedo as I sail past the junction of the start point.
Just under 8 miles covered in 24mins so ahead this time. Was 25.50 yesterday.

as I can roll faster than I can pedal I have a quick drink and tuck in and get forced onto semi hardshoulder by close passing 7.5t lorry, following vehicles keep me in the gutter, the tarmac is rougher and slower and I am sat up.
Peak out at 30mph, same as yesterday.
Peddle out of dip, short flat and down again, not as fast only 28-29mph coasting.
    About 1 mile left.
Actually have gas left in the tank (as some say) am able to sprint up to 26mph and hold it briefly before blowing.
No traffic so take a wide sweeping turn into Johnsons corner and leave the smooth Tarmac.......
Blow up again and try to maintain 18-20mph to finish line, really notice the rough surface at 80psi.

  • Stop speedo then wind down over canal (cooler here)

think I managed 7 miles before needing a drink as mouth/throat dried out.
Think about taping a 200ml bottle with straw to stem.

    Only took what I needed.
Tube, lever, spanner (cut down), multi tool, camera, phone, 500ml bottle now nearly empty.
Pump was taped under top tube.
Looked at CO2 inflators, with cylinder 93g but pack small, however one shot use and from reading buyers comments quite a few suffer a gas dump.
Pump is 73g is longer, but can be used many many times. Would rather carry pump and tube than walk several miles with a flat.

  • Stats.
    Run 1
Bike with all the things on it and riser bars.
    30mph peak coasting.
    10.26 miles covered in 31.47mins = 19.37mph average.

    Run 2
Bike lighter, same wheels/tyres but increase to 80psi over 60-70psi.
Handlebars swapped out for pursuit style.
No cap under helmet, no gloves, no long sleeve base layer, no socks.
    30mph peak coasting.
    10.24 miles covered in 29.35mins = 20.77mph average.
+1.40mph average speed. -2.13mins time taken.

    :)
