help with tire sizes

  • I have a 700 road frameset i need to put 26 OR 650B wheels on.

The clearance on 700c is 32mm.

How can I work out the equivalent clearance with 26 or 650 wheels.

And please don't suggest fitting wheels to see, obviously I'll be buying online so need to know the clearance beforehand.

    Thanks!

  • My VanNicholas Amazon Cross is specced for 700x32 and fits 27,5x2.00" with a couple mm to spare. But it depends on the shape of the chain- and seatstays, so it's going to be a bit of a gamble if you don't fit in advance.

You could perhaps do a mockup if you already have the frame? Bead seat diameter of a 27,5 wheel is 584mm, tyre can be approximated as a circle with the tyre width as diameter. With a rim width of 22mm you would then need to have the center of your tyre approx. 606mm away from the center of the axle. Print a couple of circles, put a qr in the frame, tie a piece of string of 606mm around it and you should have a pretty good idea of whether it will fit. Same goes for 26", but the string should be 25mm shorter.
