Lanzarote cycle hire

  • Just wondering if anyone's ever hired a road bike in Lanzarote and can recommend any particular company? I'm spending a week there in December and wanted to treat myself to hiring a something nice.

  • Having been priced out of anything nice in Majorca (50% price hikes in two years!) for a cheap-ish spring holiday I'm trying Costa Teguise on Lanzarote for something new at the end of May

Papagayo bikes seem to be good value compared to other Balearic and Canary Island rental places I've seen or used.

The 3-10km climbs all seem to be of the 5% or less variety, ideal for triantelopes and old fat men like me

  • I've used Free Motion in Gran Canaria. Great bikes (e.g. Cannondale Synapse) and well run. When I checked the prices between hire companies they all seemed pretty similar.

And if you do some Strava searching you will find their routes that you will be able to follow on your own (if that's your preference).

  • I used Papagayo in Playa Blanca at Xmas 2016, was impressed, got a carbon Merckx with 105 for the day for a reasonable price, lent me some shoes, & a filled cold bidon out the fridge that was for keeps. They gave me a map and showed me some excellent routes

  • Their Costa Teguise base is actually in the hotel I'm staying at which is handy

  • ...still have nightmares about the wind on Lanzarote. Having to pedal downhill is wrong.
Brilliant cycling though. Volcanic vineyards are amazing.

  • Note to future self; check the dates of Lanzarote Iron Man before booking holidays. What a shit show!

  • Lap pool in the hotel full of triantelopes from 7am training with drone cameras. Bongo bikes everywhere.

  • Are you there now?

  • Yes, I thought I was clever accidentally swerving the royal wedding and finding a hotel with a bike shop but it also has a kids tri club and Hed Tri spokes for sale in the shop in reception. Serious Tri business!

  • Gonna ride Tabeyesco?
    It’s awesome!

  • Did it yesterday ;)

  • Firstly what did you make of it?

Oooh you on the Strava LFGSS group? Did you Strava it?
Hopefully you did it quicker than me so I can remove it from my segments! (It being the only LFGSS crown I hold of any worth)

  • Week done and dusted.

    Top tips

There are no flat rides anywhere out of Costa Teguise; every route I've done has had less than 9% flat roads on it so adjust mileage accordingly. Done as much elevation as a week in Mallorca in about 2/3 the km.

DO NOT FOLLOW ANYBODY ELSES ROUTE THAT GOES OFF THE LZ ROAD NETWORK. Seriously. Some joker will put up a route that casually throws you up a 15% gravel climb or try to get you on a road passable only by 4X4 through a volcano crater. If Google street view can't preview any part of it bin it. Likewise, Google maps directions for cycles cannot be trusted stick to the driving option if trying to route on the fly.

Club La Santa is on a part of the island that you would reserve for nuclear waste re-processing. Absolute hole.

  • The weather has been utterly random too; overcast every morning so good for riding and bright/warm later but sometimes very very later or not at all like today when it has even rained. Unsure if I'll be back this time of year.
