With 1× if you want a 500% range you have to sacrifice close spacing of gears. As a total guess I bet they'll keep going bigger and bigger until we get to 16/17 speed whereupon you can have a 10-50 with ~10% spacing between each gear (1.1^(17) = 5.05). That'll get you up and down anything.
Edit: On road it's not that big a deal. But if you're one of those people who really needs a 16t for some reason then 12 speed would let you use a 16 but go from a 11-25 to a 11-28/30/32.

What problem are 12 speed groupsets solving? Though one could have said the same for 11 speed.
