I've got to do a 1:4x 50mi and a 3:4x 100mi first.
Actually, I'd not updated my 50 and 100mi PBs on TTF so I've already done a 1:47 and a 3:42 100mi.
Looks like I now just need to ride an E2 50 to see what I can do there and knock another 2min off my 100 PB.

Have you done 300 in a 12-hour yet...?
-
• #17905
No, that was going to be my next goal 2 years ago but then I started doing these silly races and just didn't have time to try for a faster 12hr. I wanted to race the Norfolk? 12hr course two years ago but couldn't face it after TCR. It's still on my list but committing to 12hr requires not doing TABR and TCR.
18min 10
300mi 12hrI like the idea of both of those.

Relube crank/spindle and cracking noise has gone. Go me.

Thanks @cjr for helping out with the Tuesday Tens last night. I didn't work out that that was who you were until I was about to go off so I didn't say hi properly.
I felt a lot more comfortable than last week after some minor tweaks to the fit and gearing down to 52 x 16. I was only 14 seconds quicker though, and still about 2 minutes off my best time, so there's still a lot of room for improvement. It was very gusty though so I will use that. And my saddle needs to go up 5-10mm so I reckon that's another 2 seconds rifht there.

Yeah, I totally didn't realise it was you! It was a tough night last night I think.
What bike were you on? I'll see if I have any pictures. I was pushing off and taking pics at in between. -

Didn't realise at the time but Tao was there, just chilling in the sun.

This was me.
I think there was some issue over whether rider 61 was about to ride home with his number, and I don't like starting with a hold so there was no need for interaction!

Ha ha. Great pic.

Yeah, sorry, didn't take many pics of the later starters. 61 missed his start and it looked a lot like he was going to ride off home with what I assume is quite an expensive timing chip. He got off around 25 mins late I think.

He was cheering on his brother Bede who is pretty fast as well.

Bede was discussing Tao's current eating habits. He got two salads yesterday - a watermelon one, which he picked the feta cheese out of, and one which came with walnuts on, which he flicked away.
Preparing for some mountains this summer?

That's a bit 'Dropout drops in'. :)

I would have thrown out the watermelon.

With a 1.5 year old and twins en route I have successfully negotiated a last hurrah biek! Spent the last few years abroad so it’s nice to be back in the UK and to get into the TT scene proper.
Thinking 1x etap/aerocoach/tririg set-up. Snagged the brakes off @coldharbour and searching for the rest of the kit.
Much excite after having to race crits (for A lack of alternative) for the last few years!

With three kids under two, you can just hang out on the wall like that :-/

• #17920
It's not a last hurrah if you find TT's exciting - you should be able to carry on long enough to disappoint those children of yours by beating them when they start racing.
Personally, I found crits more exciting than TT's ......even though I wasn't very good at them!

last hurrah
Not so fast, whippersnapper. My dad didn't get his Cervelo until his grandchildren were older than your kids.

Hounslow 100
Another spectating opportunity for those out riding west of London this Sunday.
The course is the usual Farnham - Alton A31 road with the HQ at Bentley Memorial Hall.
First man off is the promoting club's Les Howson at 7.45 am - there are 75 riders.
Competitors worth watching out for are:
Alice Lethbridge (no.50) the current women's champion and comp.record holder.(qualifying time 3.42.37.)
Charles Mitchell (no. 120) fastest man in the field with a q. time of 3.31.24.
Andrew Meliak (no. 110) second fastest on paper with a q. time of 3.38.04.
Rob Bullyment (117) mentioned on this forum in the past -sometimes rides fixed, q. time 4.0.27.
Richard Claxton (64) At 74 years of age almost the oldest man in the field (Mick Fountain, 77 years, no.46). Richard usually rides fixed with no concessions to aerodynamics - q. time 4.47.04 - he deserves a cheer!I hope to see you somewhere out on the course.

A question.
Been looking for stats on 10 times, sort of curious about Hippys goal for sub 20min.
Via this thread found times on TT forum. record of 10 in 16.35 mins was an eye opener and speed a smidge over 36mph......I understand the need for aeros as with speed you increase friction/air density and the faster you go the more this ramps up requiring more energy to hold or gain speed/velocity.
Is there a threshold point of speed on a bicycle where beyond you need to go aero ?
Was thinking i can maybe hold 20mph with moderate ease so on a flat still course i could in theory do a 10mile in 30 mins.
with some aero mods i can achive the same (limited by gear ratio) but expend less energy, so could use the saved watts to power a larger gear.
Is there a magic speed of where you hit a wall ? -
• #17924
Why not make your first target 25 mph (24 minutes)?
If you can do that without aero aids you will be qualified to start thinking about modern gadgets!

Is there a magic speed of where you hit a wall ?
No, there's no threshold (at least not until you start hitting compressibility problems, but by then you've ignited from the internal power losses so aero gains can be exploited at any non-zero indicated airspeed. On a basic road bike (CdA=0.35) on the flat, aerodynamic drag is consuming half your input power at about 12.5mph, and about three quarters at 25mph
Well-fucking-done Hippy!
