  • I have spades of spades... Well, a spade and a matlock and a till .

  • It pulled off our undercoat on the skirtingboard. Just did everything freehand in the end.

  • Hmm. I'm putting in a picture rail across the room, with one colour above and another below. Was thinking of putting masking tape across the whole room where it will go, and maybe some paper run offs above the tape, so I can just roll the whole way without bothering with a brush.

I'll do anything to avoid freehand paint brush...

  • Worth a go if there'll be a rail going on top of the actual join.

  • Nice.
I'm envious of the amount of sunlight in your bathroom. Curious place to store a bike though.

  • wtf is that?!? It looks huge... Is it the BMW badge dug into the ground?

  • :)

Living alone my bathroom is in no state to be photographed. I doubt a towel rail, no matter how good, will change much.

  • True. But if my trench is anything to go by, it's probably worth it.

  • I would like to convert a regular plugged lamp to put on my ceiling which has a dedicated outlet.
The plug itself is easy enough to remove, but of course there's no blue / brown differentiation in the cables.
    Is it easily do-able?

  • Garden electrics regs are a bit mad. If you have some armoured cable it doesn't actually need protecting since the protection is built in via the earthed wire around the cable which also protects it against damage. So it can be left laying on the surface. It's 'mechanically protected'.

It's pretty common for a light fitting to have a very normal cable though and that's pretty vunerable to most kinds of garden implements. Exterior junction boxes are a pain too as we have such a range of weather, over time almost any junction box can be attacked by water, condensation or bugs. Or all three.

If you just want to wire some ethernet to a camera, even if it had an extra low voltage. Under (I think) 50ma possibly 12v power supply, that would be fine. You're able to do as you will with anything that's touch safe, which under 50ma is.

  • So. It's possible?

  • I did similar with normal masking tape. Easier to touch up if paint gets through that masking tape, than it is to faff on with bits of undercoat pulled off by stronger masking tape. imo.

    Try a tester, obvs.

  • Slightly off-topic, but I need some safety goggles. They probably need a headband and to be close fitting - a bit like ski goggles, and difficult to pull off. Any suggestions?

  • 18inch roller kits are very expensive, wanted to try, and follow some advice, and see if it was just as easy as spraying. Looking at a few videos seems that the 18inch makes things quicker.

Cheapest set up was from Leyland SDM at £50 for an purdy frame, purdy roller insert and wooster bucket. Ended up sticking with a 12 roller, as a insert and tray for less that £6

The purdy roller is quite flimsy, and feed back seems to say that they fall apart quite quickly, while the wooster seems to be quite plasticy and the 'legs' break.

  • Look at a few places that do safety glasses, I have a set of bolle (well a few pairs of saefty glasses) look at the places that do PPE and find a model you like.

  • Having had a shed, once you get power the fun begins....

How far is the fusebox in the flat to the outside?

  • 36ft

    roughly

  • Friend, did you lay your shed concrete yourself?

  • Nice sections. Where was the site?

I love that Spear & Jackson had to bring back their 4" pointing trowel at the drop forged spec after people got very very cross about it being withdrawn.

  • Nope. Paid a chap to do it as it meant they would take all the crap they dug out away. £600 for a 6" deep 9' x 7' slab.

  • They also changed the cross section of the tang to a larger oval instead of a small circle. Ruined it.

That was a gas pipeline somewhere near Ruislip, IIRC.

  • £100/inch... Expensive date.

  • It's not the depth, it's the girth. How many times do I need to tell you!?

  • I've never thought about the price of it, sorry! I've had mine for 20 years and probably only 2 rollers in that time, I do look after them though. I guess the cost was probably saved on the first job. 12" is pretty reliable and quick. 18" you need to keep the roller very flat on the wall and watch the build up at the edges, loading the roller becomes a bit more of an art. Also try to get a ceiling paint for ceilings, usually a very high solid content, it will save roller marks and time. Easy enough to price in if you have more than 1 ceiling to do.

  • Not an issue I thought about till tried to find one. Most of the pro places aren't but cater for the diyer that wants to feel like a pro. Found the 12 doesn't leave roller marks like a 9 does, used the rota brand cheap rollers from toolstation, as have used them before and have found them to be good and don't shed. Try to clean rollers and brushes as I try and buy thedecent ones, other half buy shite from the poundshop.

Still have yet to go to france and that is quite alot of wall and confined spaces. So hand 12 roller will probably be better than 18 on a pole.

Got quite alot of paint from Homebase clearance center in ponders end? as they are clearing out stock as stores close. Got some decent branded paint for cheap...

Actually masking tape, what would you recommend?
