I used to get paid to use one, semi accurately.

You can make a fairly large dent in the ground with a mattock and paddy spoon.

Nice sections. Where was the site?

I love that Spear & Jackson had to bring back their 4" pointing trowel at the drop forged spec after people got very very cross about it being withdrawn.

They also changed the cross section of the tang to a larger oval instead of a small circle. Ruined it.

That was a gas pipeline somewhere near Ruislip, IIRC.
