i've got an unused small cage apex rear mech (10 speed) in my parts draw, will it play well with 9speed shimano mtb shifters with a 9 speed shimano cassette?

No, but you can get 9-speed SRAM X5 right hand shifter for under £20

Likewise 10 speed^. If you’re having to buy a shifter, might as well add a gear for no more money

i really don't understand gears!
surely the shifter and the cassette just need to match?
i need to get the cassette as well - what I have is the mech and shifter.
I'll have a look in the bike shop parts bin and see what they've got.

Shimano and sram pull different amounts of cable per click of the shifter so you’re derailleur with the wrong shifter will be putting your chain in gears, between gears, all over the place

SRAM kept the same cable pull ratio of 1:1 across a lot of their group sets and speeds. Look for exact actuation.
These are interchangeable but like you said, match the shifter to the cassette.
Shimano cassettes are the same spacing as sram so those are interchangeable

What printer for very occasional use (CVs, copies of travel docs, paper backup of important odds and ends), that isn't going to dry up in between uses and thus cost me £50 a time?

I'm 95% sure 1:1 and Exact are different. And X-actuation is different again but coincidentally similar to 1:1. Don't buy something for 1:1 if your other stuff is Exact!

1:1 is a 1.1 shift ratio, Exact is 1.3, X is 1.12.

SRAM really dropped the ball with the naming of these different schemes, it's very confusing.

I haven't seen anyone using 1:1 and Exact at the same time but am happy to be proven wrong. Maybe it's close enough to work even though they're not designed to match or something.

Edit: maybe you can bodge it by clamping the cable on the wrong side of the bolt etc. but I personally wouldn't bother since both 1:1 and Exact stuff is all really cheap. I personally wouldn't take the risk of incompatibility and would just get the matching one.

I have an 1:1 derailleur at home, I would be happy to try them together with my Exact Actuation shifters tomorrow night or something if anyone is interested.

Sram don't say it's the same though either. It's the same theory. Nothing is listed as compatible with both on the SRAM website.

If this stuff is coming out of a parts bin could you not just stick it on and give it a go? You'll soon find out.

I came to the conclusion that it's just easier to use a local print shop. My nearest one charges something like 5p a page for B&W A4. I only need things printed maybe 5 times a year so it works out a lot cheaper and it's not a big enough inconvenience to go there to make me want to buy my own printer.

I have a campagnolo record pista headset. Im just wondering if theres manuals or can anyone tell me what new size of bearings i need for it.

I think its new bearings i need as im finding it very difficult to get it smooth without play..

Would some kind of vertical pivoting joint indicated by the red arrows be advantageous for this single wheel trailer? Or unnecessary over relatively flat ground.
