• Hey. I've been running a Lemond Fillmore for about a year now, picked it up second-hand and am finding it really hard to determine the factory BB. All I know is that it's an external BB, with Bonty GXP crankset. Research shows it could be a Tru-Vativ Giga X-Pipe bottom bracket but I'm just not sure.

The outer shell (?) of the BB has been coming loose recently, which may tie in to the knocking sound per rev I've been getting, to the point where I could actually tighten it by hand. I'm going back to work as a messenger in the next few days and all this worries me somewhat. Anyone think they could have the right tool to tighten it up? I'll provide beer and/or whatever. Tonight or tomorrow night would be ideal. Am Manor House way but will ride anywhere.

    Cheers!

  • The same happened to me on my Lemon (but after about 3 years) - so check how long the previous owner had it.

It required a new bottom bracket. My gut tells me just to tighten will only fix it for a journey and no more.

As you point out, the bottom bracket is not a track-specific bb the local bike shop had to find the right one. LMNH will have no problem with it but I'm sure you might know other shops that might be able to assist you

  • Ouch, hope new BB isn't the solution. Never music to a messenger's ear. Will cruise down to LMNH and see what they say.

  • It's a normal hollowtech 2 bb cup (tool: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/park/bb-and-crankarm-tool-hollowtech-2-ec008302?query=bb%20tool).

I too had a Fillmore and did have a problem with the BB staying put. Some thread lock may help...

  • Hmm, thanks for that. Sounds like someone who has more than my rudimentary understanding of these things should take a look at it.

  • If needs be mate, I'm selling an old Lemond Crankset, with a BB which was replaced shortly before it was taken out. Lemme know if you're keen.

  • Thanks, I'll get someone to have a look at it then reconsider my options. That old keeping the cost down/something which works properly conundrum.

  • ok cool, well its yours for £39 -

  • Hello - I'm after a bit of advice about this Bontrager crankset. My old faithful Fillmore has exactly the same crankset as in the picture above. I've had it from new since around 2007, and I'd like to replace it with something a bit less scuffed and creaky. But I can't find anything with the same type of fitting. Is this two-piece, hollow axle design still available from anywhere? And if I have to swap to a new crankset, with presumably a new bottom bracket, what are my options? Thanks in advance

  • Absolutely. There are many options as nearly every major brand produces a hollow axel crankset. If yours is creaking than I suggest changing the bottom bracket as well, unless you're sure it's the crankset (chainring bolts can creak). Have a look at Shimano's Alfine crankset for a start. The main technical aspect to note is the axel diameter. Shimano and many others make 24mm axels. Sram and some others do 30mm.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks - that does help

  • Looks to be GXP which is Sram’s standard. Shimano as mentioned, will do several good budget options but they will require a new bottom bracket as they’re a straight 24mm axle and gxp are 24 but with a 22mm non drive side.
SRAM apex or rival would be the direct replacement for what you have
