Note the use of more correct terminology and also the utter racism.

Travellers are a minority ethnic community
Why? People in the travelling 'community' come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, so how are they all collectively all a single ethnic minority? They may share a lifestyle which has certain common features, but that doesn't make them a distinct ethnic group.

My comments relate to appropriate language - perhaps political correctness at it’s finest. Use of the word ‘traveller’ is appropriate - other terms (which I have deliberately not used) are not, with the exception of ‘gypsy’ which solely relates to Romany Gypsies. I am not commenting on anything other than appropriate language.
The initial post may demonstrate a prejudiced view of this community, or some form of stereotyped image of their community.
I’ll stick to appropriate language.

That's not an answer to my question. Saying that travellers are an ethnic minority because that's 'appropriate language' is no better an argument than saying that travellers are an ethnic minority 'because I say they are'. Or adopting a Humpty Dumpty approach to linguistics.
How can travellers be an ethnic minority when they are an ethnically diverse group of people? It's a simple enough question, and flying the canard of political correctness isn't an answer either.

I am like 85% certain the appropriate language in this case is "fuck bottle-throwing cunts in trucks."

My comment relates to appropriate language. The news article seems to intimate that the travellers asked for minority ethnic status. They seemed content to be granted the status and hence the use of the term ‘minority ethnic community’ is appropriate.
I am only commenting on language, I am not making any point about the community or its’ history. I am not getting into a debate about the rights and wrongs.

Please don't post that NPD shit, even to illustrate a point. A link to the image, with a warning, will do just fine. -

Good point. Seeing it IRL was bad enough but no need to spread their bs around. Edited.

Was going to keep out of this, but gypsy doesn't just refer to roma, plenty of the Irish variety use it.
-
• #17638
That may be the case. The next time you are speaking to them use that term. I’d be interested to hear how they respond to you using the term.
During any contact I have had with travellers, I have not used that term as it may be deemed derogatory by them.

I am speaking from personal experience, engaging with actual real life gypsies, in a social setting, albeit not actually in a caravan. I find it helps to not go around going 'hey gypsies!' but on the whole they were ambivalent between the two when discussed.

• #17641
Fair enough. I will stick with 'travellers' which has upset no one from that community recently - albeit it is not usually a social setting when I have contact.

Not to mention the previous "camel toe" pics in the same thread.

Anyone else think adding 'moved to eBay' to the end of an unsuccsessful classifieds thread or title then not closing or deleting the thread is taking the piss?

Original post should be completely wiped and title should be “moved elsewhere”
If only classifieds could be deleted by the user then all this would be avoided.

This might help although maybe I’ve missed the point
You have missed some of the point at least. The Act essentially says that, for example, Nigerian is a racial group even though it contains parts of the the racial groups Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo etc. In context, we might say that Gypsy is a racial group within the meaning of the Act, even though it contains parts of the racial groups Roma, Irish etc. What we can't say is that traveller is a racial group, because it describes a lifestyle not a colour, nationality or ethic/national origin. A peripatetic lifestyle is not a protected characteristic. Also, the Equalities Act is inimical to a free society and as such is an example of the evil which governments do when they forget that they are supposed to be the servant of the people, not their master.
If I understand @TGR I think he already said this but the accusations of casual racism were less from whatever term was used but more from blaming travelers for his problems.
I think, though, that it is more prejudice and scapegoating more than anything else.
