  • Do you have access to and clearance to burn meths?

  • I have the burr removal tool yes. the only other tools i've needed were standard bike toolkit ones.

  • You get less extraction with cooler water so you'll need a finer grind and/or longer steep. Try them one at a time and try both if it doesn't help. The other factor is the water will have been continually heated, which is not as good as using a kettle at home.

  • What travel filter is that? Looks great

  • Yah. Everything I drink at home I will also drink at home that week. Tastes exponentially better at home.

@withered_preacher Ha, no. I work in an almost entirely wooden building. We're not even allowed toasters due to the open element...

Thanks @StevePeel I have tried longer immersion post steep (don't usually invert but did try it and it didn't make much of a difference), but not a longer steep itself. I'll try an almost Turkish grind and see what happens!

  • Microwave the water?

  • Ta very much, will check it out!

  • Tbh there’s not much you can do to work around poor water quality. Best to bring your own kettle as suggested above.

  • make the coffee at home and stick it in a thermos that has been properly primed with boiling hot water for 15 minutes before filling.

  • Ooh - is that a thing? That seems like it should obviously be a thing. I'm going to try that right now.
Edit: it's obviously a thing. I remember I used to put a splash of water in a mug prior to pouring but for whatever reason I stopped.

  • Also, buy a Technivorm. Changed my life.

  • absolutely. a properly warmed thermos will keep a drink steaming hot for 24 hours if you have a decent one.

  • .

  • I ride to work 3 out of 5 days a week in the summer and leave at 5.45AM all year around whether riding or getting the train. It's 38km each way. I need to make the coffee at work. Making at home is too much hassle/noisy. Nice idea though. My own kettle is the best/most ridiculous option.

  • Or just a big batch of coldbrew. Seems to last quite a while without losing flavour in my experience.

  • @JB the other thing with those hot water taps is the water is proper rank. If you make a black tea, the scum that forms on the surface of the water is incredible. I assume it’s because it’s continuously heated like @StevePeel says, because the cold water from the same tap appears to be filtered so shouldn’t have limescale, or not much at least.

  • I've been drinking coffee from mugs like a mug.

I used to brew a 1.2l on the technivorm in the morning and drink a mug every hour or two. Usually there'd be a mug wasted at the end of the day. Recently impulsed a Klean Kanteen 12oz insulated and have come down to 420ml / +/-35gm on the technivorm. Have a small cup as soon as it's brewed and the rest goes in the Kanteen. Perfect temperature and keeps all day. Joy. And getting through half as much coffee.

  • I must be a heathen, always thought that coffee in spain and italy tastes reliably great, across the country, with nary a water filter in sight.

Mind you, you guys are in london, so maybe a filter is a good idea.

  • Klean Kanteens are awesome - I use mine all the time for basically just keeping coffee hot mostly at home.

  • I've lost the filter from my hario cold brewer - can I buy replacement in London? Amazon has one for like £12 which considering the price of a new one seems silly. But before I just buy another thought I'd ask the hive mind

  • Is there any where in Central London that has a selection of freshly ground coffee's from different roasters? I'm thinking something like an utobeer from borough market but for coffee.

I only ask as I quite often fancy a bag of square mile, or dark arts etc but they all have postage charges. Otherwise It'll be a bit of a cycle about :)

  • Not sure about different roasters, but you can swing by Monmouth in Borough Market or Bermondsey and they often have a decent variety of beans you can buy.
