Draggy Freewheel Sound

My freewheel has developed an odd sound which seems to kick in every rotation. Almost a draggy noise similar to the one I get when I pedal after freewheeling and everything engages. I've taken apart the hub, checked the pawls and such but I can't seem to get rid of the sound. Any ideas?

Try it without the speed sensor (?) on the hub.

Ta tried that, doesn’t help.

The noise only seems to happen when the cassette is in a certain position on the free hub.

The freehub sounds healthy to me, more like something is rubbing.

Remove the chain and spin the wheel by hand: you'll be able to rule the freehub in or out.

Sounds slightly uneven, this is likely mote down to wheelbuild than a hub issue though, see it a lot on spendy hubs, the noisy freehub pawls exessaerbate it.

Sadly not. I’ve done what @BrickMan suggested - took the cassette off and spun in my hand and if the freehub is clicking against a certain spline then then I can feel the crunch.

Sounds like bearings in freehub tbh.

If it’s only happening when freewheeling then it’s either a pawl that’s not retracting fully, or a bearing in the body. I can’t make out what hub it is, I’m guessing it something half-decent so you should be able to get a replacement freehub body.

In most freehubs you can replace the bearings.
Could be a number of things -
Tyre hitting the frame.
Small cog hitting the frame.
Loose adjuster nut.
Worn bearings.
Pawls need cleaning.
Loose valve? Most likely not.

Cheers for the suggestions @RainbowBungle @Sam @jj72 - still not figured it. Pawl springs return ok by hand. I've take the wheel out of the frame and removed the cassette so that cuts out those options. It's only in about half of the positions of the freehub body against the splines, it's audible and perceptible by feel too, like a judder.

Putting the wheels on a new frame this week so will get the mechanic to check it out.

Two new bearings in the freehub body sorted me out.
