Road Wheels & Road Wheel Recommendations?

  • So I'm thinking about some better disc wheels for my Mason and wondered about Carbon - any recommendations?

As far as I can see there's a huge gap between Hunt / light bicycle level of quality, and Enve / knight composites type stuff - plus a surprising number of quite heavy but not that cheap wheels out there. Which way would people go?

Or do I just go fancier alloy and go Hed Ardennes / Belgiums?

I want tubeless ready and disc brake; I already have 2 sets of hunt alloy wheels which I have no real complaints with, just not sure if I should look further afield

  • Carbon / lightbicycle seems the usual on here. Enve or HED if you have $$$

  • Are you mistaking quality for price? Enve quality isn't anything special, you just pay for US manufacturing costs. There are voids in a dissected Enve rim same as the cheapest Chinese rims. Light Bicycle rims are really very, very good value.

  • Good question - the answer is I don't know, hence asking! I've not seen either in the flesh so it's hard to tell.

Happy to try light bicycle given all the good reviews - I just wondered about sales support, and also product development (will they have put as much thought into aero design, etc).

Other brand that I'd wondered about were Flo - I have their Flo 30 alloys on my road bike and they do feel fast but are a bit flexy compared to the Hunts

What so far unidentified deficiencies in the Hunt wheels do you hope to solve by getting something "better"?

  • Not loads; have had minor issues with the freewheel on one set, plus the valve hole doesn't seem perfectly aligned (I get a wobbly valve and some difficulties keeping it airtight for tubeless).

Plus slight performance improvements would be nice, if I can get some more aeros (I find I smash it up hills but regularly get left behind on flats / higher speed sections)

Edit: I am aware that any gains will be pretty marginal...

  • Have anyone got any experience with new Open Pro disc only rims? They look ace and light.

Please let me know if I am wrong.

Try the wheel building thread, @thecycleclinic has certainly had them in his hands

  • Anyone got any experience of Zipp 302 or 3T C60 discus!?

  • Dont forget flo have new disk rims in the pipeline shortly.

  • Not familiar with them. Plus I was thinking to try get a new second hand pair.

  • Ok so a bit out of left field;
I currently have Hope 20five’s, Rs4 straight pull. If I can get the RD40 rims could I get someone to swap the rest over?
What might it cost for the labour?

  • Cheapest single speed wheels that will still do the job for commuting? Asking for a friend

  • Asking for a friend

Ask you friend what rim diameter, tyre width and braking system he needs to accommodate.

  • 700c 25mm and tektro standard brakes, it will be mounted on a Cannondale Caad 8 frame

  • Its a good job your friend has specified. Otherwise you'd have had single speed wheels suggested to you with 120mm spacing but your frame is 130 and bending aluminium is less than ideal.
Get any cheap road wheelset and use a single cog and spacers on the freehub

  • bending aluminium

woahwoahwoah just drop two 5mm spacers on the track hub axle behind the locknuts.

  • Providing you've got enough axle to still get enough engagement with track nuts after losing 1cm length which isn't a given

  • Okay will do that then, thanks

  • Also am I not mistaken in thinking the dropouts would be 9mm and the axle 10mm so you'd have to file something?

  • Rear axles are 10mm. All cheap track hubs (formula, system ex, novatec, miche) have axles long enough.

  • I’d still say a road wheel is a better option.
    Cheaper and adjustable chainline

  • Better freewheel as well

  • Yeah. But (if we’re doing pros/cons) it’s a weaker wheel, lighter .... etc

The only correct answer is ‘go fixed’ as commuting on ss is really dull ;)

  • I'm looking to price these for a quick sale.
30mm 24/28H Far Sports rims, Hope RS Mono hubs in black, Sapim CX Ray spokes, Vittoria Open Corsa CX tyres and 11 speed cassette. What price point would ensure a quick sale (for all parts mentioned above) and would anyone here be interested? Only done 200km. Built by the forums best wheel builder Arup.
