  • Thank you for the wise words. I suspect I'll buy an EOS 300 or something cheap like that. I may hate carrying it around so don't want to spend too much money. Great shout on the lens size, too :-)

Look for a 300V or 300X model, they have a steel mount and a little higher shutter speed.
They can be had for peanuts on eBay..

Also if you want to keep it small and light you might check out this lens (Canon EF 40mm STM)
..it doesn't look like it but that's a really great little lens that can be had for under £100 used.

Shot this on a friends' Canon for a while and loved it.
Image quality is very good, and it's surprising how much easier the camera is to stow away in a rather full bag with a lens that isn't protruding but rather flush with the front of the camera body.

  • I have this lens, I use it on a film Eos, but I use it all the time on a digital Eos too.
As r&s said the film body was about a fiver and the lens was £90 in mint condition.
If you put the lens on a 300 you'd have something pretty compact, light and easy

I've got an EOS 300x and the 40mm STM and would also recommend this combo. If you want a zoom to go with it the original 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM with the metal mount is very good and can be got for cheap - i got mine from MPB for £70
