• Could well be it. Recommended pressure for my Race Kings 27.5x2.0 is 3.5 bar, I have run them up to 1.5 bar without issue and think I could go lower. (Although a relatively low system weight of ~70kg might be a factor in that?)

    The range is for safe operation in worst case conditions. On the low side, running maximum permitted load at maximum rated speed on the hottest road will not cause overheating. On the high side, same load, speed and ambient temperature won't cause a blow off of the largest tyre within tolerance on the smallest rim within tolerance.

  • Once the tyre is seated you then need to disconnect the hose. Hopefully the bead will remain in place. Now reinstall the valve core and pump up as normal.

  • My experience so far is that if all the air escapes, the tyre deforms under the loss of pressure and the seal fails. I usually end up pushing about 110 psi in, so that there's still a chance some air will still be present once I get the core back in. Just wondered if I was missing something, no biggie.

    Also, why do I always end up bending my Presta cores (the bit you undo to get air in)? Am I not supposed to fully undo them?

  • Operator error. Only undo enough of the thread to allow passage of air.

    Also You may find that your tyres will seat with the valve core in.

    And thank you for not asking the same questions that everyone else does, it’s a relief not to be reading another “I pumped my tyres up and left them overnight with no sealant and they have lost pressure”

    You may be missing the bead retaining lip (arrowed in the drawing). It's in the UST standard, but seems to have gone astray in a great many so-called "tubeless ready" rims.

    The rim in question is a Stan's ZTR Grail which is BST-R, which is probably at odds with the IRC Formula Pro X-guard in question (though I haven't died a jizzy death yet).

    Happily I don't have to burden you with the old question of 'why does my tyre deflate', as these seem to hold the air considerably better than Schwalbe nightmares.

  • If I can't seat a tyre with the valve core in then I know my set up is not going to work. More tape is usually the - tester unapproved - solution.

  • Ugh, old tires on new rims.. deflated over night. I knew it was dumb to even try to use the "factory" applied tape. Will now replace with duct tape (but trying to preserve the expensive sealant) which I should have just done in the first place. Idjit.

  • Rather put the duct tape over the existing one than replacing it, would give you a tighter fit which is helpful for old/stretched tyres.

  • 35mm marathon supremes went up reasonably painlessly on regular rims with gorilla tape, also just about squeeze in my mudguards with some adjustments and a little bit of dremelling. Annoyingly I did it a bit drunk while putting some pins in some A530 pedals and put the front cunt on backwards, like a cunt. Lost a little pressure in the workshop before riding home but not much, will check again in the morning, trying out new fancy finish line sealant, seems good.
