  • gonna wrastle up some nettle tea from the nettles in the garden shortly
anyone tried it ? any recipes ? could i add some dandelion leaves ?

  • Made a nettle, garlic mustard and chickweed pesto today. Found a ton of Elderflowers I didn't know about in the process. Will be going in a beer.

Anyone know what these are. I thought they might be fat hen or good king henry but I'm not sure.

  • I didn't know Chickweed was edible: what sort of flavour does it have?

    Tastes a bit like chicken?

  • You can eat the whole plant, tastes very mild, a bit lettuce like.

  • Don’t know if this counts as foraging, but I scored a whole muntjac deer at the side of the road on the way home on Friday night. I didn’t see it that morning, so it must have been hit some time during the day. This is by far the biggest animal I’ve tackled and it was hard work with all the wrong tools in the dark on a makeshift bench in the garden. I got the haunch off the back and split it in two, took both loins off, one fore leg because the other was badly smashed and a nice thick neck steak for stewing with the bone in. I didn’t keep the trimmings because I didn’t actually know how fresh it was. Butchery skills definitely need some practice too.

However, all perfectly fresh. BBQd loin on Saturday was delicious and about 1kg of absolutely stunning meat off one hind leg so far has made a really nice casserole and 3 steamed puddings.

  • next level foraging

  • in the dark on a makeshift bench in the garden

Must have made for interesting views for neighbours...

  • Yeah... I waited until the kids next door went in but basically gutted it hanging up in the doorway of the greenhouse over a tarpaulin. Then butchered it on my favourite bit of spare kitchen worktop on a couple of Workmates in the garden. I’m quite overlooked. I have no idea what my neighbours think!

  • Crimewatch thread!

  • good work jonny 69
    dorset style there,
wild garlic pesto again second week running for me, seems lamecompared to whole deer, but I did go to dorset venison fest saturday

  • Wrong tools. Or right tools? :/

  • Picked some elderflower, made cordial and vinegar. Also found some ash keys which I've pickled.

  • ash keys

    What they?

  • The seed pods that hang down. If you get them young enough they are nice pickled.

  • Ah, seen loads, might be too late, will give that a go if I can :)

  • Like these?
