Set up a static IP using something like https://www.noip.com open a port and ping something on your network (probably has a variety of security issues and is full of technical words that I only half know the meaning of).
Have something on your home network that you can connect to externally (heating, lights, etc). See if you can connect to it.
IT question from a total noob. Is there an easy way I can check to see if my internet at home is up and running when I'm out?
