  • This is why i'm struggling to justify upgrading my 2013 MBP: all the ports, no goofy adaptors, tonnes of power.

  • Just buy everything TB3, thats what I did... going from 3 cables to connect an ACD and MBP 2013 to 1 to connect the Ultrafine to MBP 2017 is a dream.

    I hate wires.

  • Sadly enough, I'm slowly coming to the same conclusion. Quite something to spend a few £k's just to ger rid of cables, but the spaghetti under my desk is a pain in the ass

  • May have let me have a root around. Might not be able to check until the weekend though.

  • Cheers! I'm hoping my old 2013 that my folks have still has access to Sierra or El Cap...

  • such a good computer
now have to specifically request the old ones when we hire at work

  • open App store
    hit purchased
    look for el Capitan

if you don;t have it I can send it to you

  • Nah doesn’t work as I’m on HS and my 2017 won’t run it.

If you can hook a brother up it would be much appreciated.

  • will pm you

  • did you move any other downloads of OSX out of your applications folder?

you can only have one OSX installer in that directory at a time

Edit: I've PM'd you a DL link so you can pull it from my NAS

  • I used to keep back up instals of all gen os but it appears Apple now blocks folks from downloading non installed previous gen os. Classic Apple.

  • thanks for sharing your serial number. i'll just register that as stolen......

  • but yeah I also have no reasons to upgrade yet.

  • Still not having any joy... Enclosures arrived so got the SSDs out of the old MBP and tried the whole process again... No change... I did get it to work perfectly if I used the user profile/home folder on the SSD but the minute I copied that stuff over to the new account on the new machine it stopped working...

Not sure what to do next, full of cold and can't be fucked with it right now...

I'll probably have to cheat and manually copy stuff from the old home folders into the new ones i.e. old documents into new documents, old music into new music, etc... Anyone got a better idea? I'm stumped...

  • You are sorted?

  • Joe, could you describe in a bit more detail what you have?
    from what I can see:

    1. SSD 1 (OS, config files, what version of OSX?)
    2. SSD2 (applications?)
    3. TM backup (where is this?)
    4. Target drive on you MBP (what version of OSX?)

how are you trying to connect the SSD drives, via USB? What about the TM backup drive, is that USB too?

Are you using migration assistant to restore files from time machine? if so why do you need the old drives connected, is this b/c your TM backup is out of date?

Can you browse the folder structure on both SSD1 and SSD2?

Also it's useful to think about what your target set up will be - do you want to reuse the SSDs in a raid array for storage, or as backup drives, or cold storage for eg. install media?

Finally - what specifically do you need to migrate?

  • For DMG files? Yep think so.... cheers.

  • Hey Fred!

SSD 1 is OS and applications, latest version of High Sierra
SSD 2 is my user profile/home folder
Time Machine backups are on two mirrored USB hard drives...
Target drive is also latest version of High Sierra...

I can browse the files on the SSDs so could potentially copy pasta the data in manually... I just can't get the migration manager to do this automatically, it wants the OS and home folder on one disk to move everything over properly...

I'm gonna keep the old SSDs as portable storage, gonna store as little data as possible on the new MBP's SSD... Does that make sense?

I seem to remember @Well_is_it or @chrisbmx116 did a similar thing when they were running two SSDs on the same MBP...

  • Time Machine backups are on two mirrored USB hard drives

by mirrored you mean each USB hard drive has an identical copy of your TM backup?

Is the TM backup up to date?

Does migration assistant see the TM backup ?

  • you can whatsapp me actually, I'm in work avoidance mode at the moment

  • damn! didn't realise you could do that?! thanks for the heads up :)

  • Yeah, all that stuff is spot on... I'm halfway through another migration now, will give you a tinkle if I get stuck... Don't recognise the new username tho'... 🤔😳😂

  • I'm 90% there, my iPhoto library seems to be fucked, hope I can sort that out... Most of the data seems to have come over ok... Adobe stuff is being a bit weird but I'm using a super old cracked version of CC, I'm getting a pukka CC account through work soon anyway so it'll get binned... Also need to get rid of my old user login which pops up on start up but the delete is greyed out in system preferences so can't get rid, will have to read up on that...

Let's see what other surprises tomorrow has in store!

  • Did @freddo sort you out, haven’t had a chance to check for this yet, but might get some time over the next couple of days if you still need it..

  • He did indeed, although found some dmgs on an old machine in the end. Cheers though!
