  • I don't know about the specific contexts but several parts of that article made me feel awkward.

She did not tell them she was trying to conceive

Why should she? I'm no expert on pregnancy nor employment law but my understanding is that there is some threshold mid pregnancy (12 weeks?) before which it is unusual to disclose pregnancy because of the higher risks of miscarriage. Before then I don't see why she should have any obligation to tell the team.

hid debilitating morning sickness from them for the first 12 weeks when she couldn’t ride her bike

This is the one case where telling the team might be relevant, but surely this is what the team doctor is for. If she's unwell then the doctor should be able to take her of the roster without fully divulging the medical details until Lizzie is comfortable to do so.

With no team salary coming in any more and no maternity pay, statutory or otherwise.

Isn't she still under contract with Boels? Surely they have an obligation to pay maternity leave? And how come she won't have a contract when she comes back, can teams just dump riders once they become pregnant?

Without knowing all the details this article certainly makes it sound like pro cycling is a pretty unwelcoming environment for women.

  • She’s under contract with Boels-Dolman to the end of this season.

All riders are on short term contracts, and are effectively treated as contractors rather than employees. I’m not sure how employment law handles pregnancy, but whichever way you look at it, it just adds more to the pro women cyclists have to fight horrible sexism case.
