Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • They're designed to work with the same calipers.

In many ways, they've done hydros for ages, why would the move to road not work?

  • What is designed to work with what? the RX4 for road? That's just the icing on the cake.

I wanted to know if flat bars levers would work with road flat mount calipers, coz there is no MTB flat mount caliper yet. Everyone I have spoken to think it'd probably work but not 100% sure. So I don't know what you are referring to?

  • Here's your solution: just get some mtb hydros and get some post to flat mount adaptors ;)

  • I can't imagine a bit of methylene blue would hurt anything. You need absolutely fuck all to dye a huge amount of liquid.

  • Just wait and see what the DOT eats through.

  • For Godness sake, I knew that solution since day 1, but why would I want to do that before exploring all possibility?

And what's the point in doing that? MIght as well jsut spec the frame with post mount, which is exactly whag I don't want.

  • Post mount works fine, is readily available, proven reliability and yeah IMO other than keeping up with the latest trend I see no need for it.

Why would you spec a frame for something you know that there'll be issues i.e. leaky caliper and then try to fix that?

I'll understand if you got a flat mount frame for a song but getting something with a known issue on a custom frame, really?

  • Nah post mount is shit, I'm glad it's dying. Or if it's not dying, it should be.

My FS mtb has a flat mount rear brake.

  • Let's be constructive here.

Care to elaborate why it's shit?

    1. It's one of those bastard things mass production frame builders like because it shaves nickels and dimes off construction costs compared to IS.
    2. It then fails the ham-fisted mechanic test.

Flat has the benefit of Post in that it's easy to adjust and theres no stack of shims to drop, and is 50% more resilient to ham-fisted home mechanics * due to the rear calliper being the the thing that's threaded, not the frame. Shame they couldn't do that with the fork mount too but hey.

    * and ham fisted shop mechanics

I know rite? It's the weirdest thing.

  • In keeping with the trend, @coventry_eagle

    Magura MT8 FM

Just because I can and wanna... ¯_(ツ)_/¯

(Not saying I will get the MT8 though, but it is very tempting!)

In all seriousness, adaptors are only for flat to post but not post to flat, so if I am spending 1000s of my hard earned cash on something that I will enjoy for years to come, why would I limit my options?

  • The top end Magura stuff is truly wallet crushing.

  • but is it really worth the money or is it one of those vanity items...?

  • They are very light, and extremely powerful yet modulate well. And use mineral oil. And they don't stop working randomly.

Worth it over XTR? Dunno. Maybe if you are privateer racing type.

  • Magura fluoro magic is real.

This is definitely still a robot spider leg though.

  • I read that flat mount isn't ideal for steel/ti. Not sure why though.

  • Consulting my bank manger...

  • I read that flat mount isn't ideal for steel/ti. Not sure why though.

Let's ask our own forum frame builder, shall we? @coldharbour, do you know why?

  • Forum frames? I'll have a couple.

    1. snottyotter x 2
  • Hmm. Trying to install shimano rotors (RT800) on Hope RS4 centerlock disc hubs. I have the splined lockring tool, but it won't go over the axle caps of the hub to actually get the thing tightened up.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

  • You need one of the other lockrings with external splines.

  • Awesome. I was hoping it was something simple like that. Ta.

  • Like so...
