  • A little more back and forth, but he absolutely, resolutely won't support his assertion that all the problems we face is down to brown people and white people who speak funny.

This is actually an excellent idea.

It could be used for bikefits, tailoring, and the feet could be sent off to have bespoke shoes made in cheap leather countries like Pakistan.

In a year it will have paid for itself.

  • Out of voyeuristic curiosity did you actually call him a racist?

  • Yes.

  • If he doesn't vote then his months of agonising about whether a Leave vote was for the best wasn't really time well spent imo.

  • Interesting to see what the actual %age of immigration for various areas is:

    http://www.migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/migrants-in-the-uk-an-overview/

I'd assumed the Midlands had a bit more and the SE had less. Obvs old data, but interesting nonetheless. Table 2 is quite revealing of why people would perceive a huge jump in immigration.

  • That level of detail I suspect is beyond him.

The amazing thing is this - there are a lot of thick, bigoted but rich people on the Porsche forum.

Some of them are amazingly ignorant and will (for e.g.) actually state that May is a great PM and doing a fantastic job, which is so far from the truth that it's almost literally breath-taking.

Yet, they own businesses, they clearly either make or have access to significant funds - whilst being both the worst of humanity and thick as two short planks.

I can understand one guy, a self-professed facist, as he works on oil rigs and makes his money from the high risk and unpleasant working conditions that that entails, but the rest - including Mark there - are just bizarre.

They are all evidence, if any were needed, that this country is fucked - by rights they should all be working in an Amazon warehouse on zero-hours contracts.

Nice correlation between immigration and economic output.

  • Varying skills sets.

Quite a few of the wealthy people I've met who've made their money from owner-managed businesses come across as "practical dooers", for want of a better phrase. They've spotted opportunities and built the right relationships. I'm not sure you need the same levels of critical thinking as say a lawyer.

  • I guess it goes to show that political tribalism and the absence of any (as you say) level of critical thinking is no impediment in business.

That said, voting to implode the economy does strike me as somewhat counterproductive from a sales perspective.

  • A telling thing in your exchange up there is "I am not a racist because I employ a lot of muslims, I wouldn't do that if I hated them."

The equation of racism with hatred is a real issue. It allows him, and probably many others, to honestly believe that they are not racist. They don't hate black people. They just think that people of other races and cultures who weren't born here should be regarded differently to people who were born here and look more like him.

The latter is still racist, in my book, but not in his.

Ageism, it seems to me, does not have the same category issue. No one says that ageism is the hatred of the elderly. It's just not employing them or listening to them as much as you would a younger person.

I'd love to see a prime time TV advert, or EastEnders plot that made this crystal clear. "Being racist doesn't mean that you hate black people. It means you think they are different to white people in fundamental, non racial ways, and should be treated differently as a consequence. Rickyyyyyyyyyy!"

  • Quite agree. The other aspect of the conversation was him asking whether I was a total mental for asking him why a UK that was only "10% white British" would be a bad thing.

You can fill in the results of Gammon bingo...

  • You are a total mental, bit for other reasons espoused in this thread, obviously!

  • They've locked the thread now, which is always a little bit of a let down.

  • Car looks nice though

  • Can a german car owner be racist?

Do they own a hugo boss uniform?

  • These will the same arse sitting in spain (costa del crime) moaning about the forin people.

Edit - Maybe I need to look in the mirror.

  • :D this would never work, it would only be a shitter car for a short while before dents are spruced then a respray everything gradually upgraded to shiny new and you will have another concourse worthy car that your bike will be refused entry to :D

  • I shouldn't ask, but the question has been going round in my head for a few hours now: Why are you leaving your powerful estate car which is eminently suited to load-carrying and hiring something that isn't?

  • I'll be in Corsica

  • You can drive there. OK, there'll be a ferry bit, but still.

  • The Polo is the largest hire car that is available

  • Yeah, but V8 Mercedes estate, European road trip, sounds like the perfect combination to me. I wouldn't be hiring anything. Except maybe the bicycles.

  • And I don't have the time to drive down, although that might be fun.

  • Motorail to near Marseille then overnight ferry to Corsica.

Then you can work on the train whilst your car is whizzed down there.

An absurd idea, I know, but I love the romance of it.

You can affray the costs against the putative hire car.
