  • Must have been on the wifi still as it seems to be working now.

An iphone with no sim should connect to the wifi and internet though shouldn't it? My current SE certainly does.

Nm, I reset it, started it up as a new phone and its totally cleared. Had to put my sim in to 'activate' it but once I'd done that it was connecting to the internet via the wifi or mobile data with sim in or out so I figure it's good to go now.

I dunno, must have not been happy to not have connected via only sim or something?

  • What about a 2014 mac mini? Cheap as chips, it'll be a bit slower but should still be very usable and you can upgrade to an SSD in (though you can't upgrade the RAM). OSx has pretty decent virtual memory management which uses the HD as virtual RAM, so if you run out of memory it'll treat the SSD as an extension to the onboard RAM. My 2014 mini pootles along fine :)

At a later stage you can upgrade to an eGPU if you want which will give you all you need I think.

  • That's a good option and one I've considered, I'm very close to just buying a new laptop and being done with it... Tho' the idea of a dedicated desktop plus a tablet of some description is also quite appealing...

  • I wouldn't touch a Mac mini with a barge pole in this day and age... its way over priced and out of date. And buying nearly half a decade old tech is crackers talk.

  • I've been staring at the refurbished store all weekend, I'm having a really hard time pulling the trigger on a new MBP...

  • The new models are great. You won’t regret it. Aim for the best gpu model.

  • Yeah, that's what I'm doing... Just been through the credit check process, ugh, hate it... Interest free credit but shitloads of fees every time you make a payment, fuck off...

    This is what I'm getting...

  • Solid. Refurb are always wise moves.
You are aware they will prob update the MacBook Pros this autumn? Makes little difference if you need the laptop now...

  • Ok, ready to pull the trigger... Mate's discount is cheaper than the refurb store so gonna go brand new, was worrying about my peripherals then remembered that they're all plugged into my display anyway, too easy... All I need is a vertical MBP stand of some kind, two Thunderbolts pretty much take up my whole desk... Any ideas?

  • @Donut! Who doesn’t post on here anymore got a sweet vertical stand for his new MacBook Pro, says it’s a henge vertical dock
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Henge-Docking-Station-MacBook-Retina/dp/B00JPIKNX2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525073607&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=henge+dock&dpPl=1&dpID=41FcwQFwBxL&ref=plSrch

Says he runs two cinema displays off a 2015 MBP with thunderbolt cables.

  • I was looking at those but I don't think they'll work with the more recent MBPs...

  • Not sure why you don't go with the Mac Pro tower (5.1) 6 core. Massively expandable, already built for 2 displays and perfect for Logic, Creative Cloud stuff. Sure they're 8 years old but they're well built.

  • Like ChrisBMX says, they've been around forever and the new version is about to come out, why would you even consider it? They didn't even have a demo version at the Brisbane Apple Store for me to try out (incidentally, with what?!?) when I was last there...

  • Head to their website, looks like usb c ones are on pre order. If you need to and it’s cheaper to purchase over here. I can buy and send across.

  • Just for lols I’ll bite: aside from GPU (which I’ve already spec’d as an eGPU) and retina display (which he has) what is materially better on a 2018 MBP than a 2014 Mini? TB3, okay (can he afford any TB3 peripherals?) but apart from that I doubt you or I would notice the processor improvement or the faster SSD bus. I still think they’re great little boxes as a temporary solution and he’ll have a backup machine when he upgrades.

  • I’ve got a twelvesouth one which is, fine. They all seem to do their job. Do you have amazon in Straya yet?

  • Hmmm see what you are saying.... but... egpu's are not supported over TB2, sure there are scripts but who knows when Apple might decide to kill the work arounds.
I do like the minis but near half a decade old machine? Nah.

  • Think we must be talking about different things, I'll stop trying to help :)

  • Anyone have a TB2 male to male cable they no longer need and wanna sell, £40 fml

  • Why are those thunderbird cables so fucking expensive?

  • Oh, ignore me I'm just a silly old fool...

MBP purchased! On my way home with it now, bike ride and two bus trips to get there... I need a car... But I can't afford one now... 😂😭

  • It's a stunning machine, can't get over how thin and light it is, amazing... However, I was under the impression there were four of the old style Thunderbolt ports, didn't realise they'd all be USB-C... Not a big deal, just need to get an adaptor for the display(s) and everything else will come out of the back of them... Next step is to nab a couple of caddies for my SSDs and move everything over tomorrow, I can't do anything with it right now... Might as well wait til I have everything I need... #itsjustmacsmate

  • Told ya!
Those who haven’t used them tend to whinge but as soon as you buy one and start using it you realise just how bloody good they are.
People bang on about under powered gpus as if they are recent downgrades, past gen all but one was iris and before that it was bottom level 6/750s.

Not that I don’t wish they had more powerful gpus... even a 1050ti would be nice.

  • I have a:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

Thought about replacing it early this year, but looked at the existing MBPs and was a bit underwhelmed.

Will they be updated this year?

  • Yes, prob. But late. There are new cpus but Apple are usually late with updates.
The new 13 inch mbps are works of art.
    I have 2012 15, 2016 15 and 2017 13, the newest one is by far my fave.
