pedals, clips and straps
For what? If you want to Just Ride, follow Grant Petersen's advice and don't bother. If you want your bike to look like it was made yesterday by somebody who hadn't seen a bike since 1985, Zefal clips and straps and whatever reasonable facsimile of 1970s Campag pedals suits your budget and aesthetic; MKS, Wellgo, Exustar etc.

I like MKS urban or g10, plastic clips and MKS straps.
MTB type pinned pedals tend to wear my shoes very quickly, and having clips/straps gives you some security in damp weather.
