Umm, am running Mirage 8's brifters (which are cheapish at about £25 a pair) with 10spd Chorus mechs, chainset and 10-block (albeit on a Mirage 10spd hub.) Shifting's a bit sketchy sometimes but it works :/ mostly and they seem pretty robust / longlife-y. I think there are some f/s right now on cough retrobike cough
Actually, not sure any of this is helpful. Ignorance and necessary penny pinching will probably mean I'll die.

thanks for the advice, I hadn't even considered that. according to sheldon b it would mean moving everything onto a new rear hub as a 9/10 cassettes won't fit well on an 8. Might try the Avanti and start saving for a full switch down the road.
