  • It's pretty rad alright and after having driving my GFs b4 legacy I'm actually really glad I got this instead. It's definitely a larger car than I'm used to but handles really nicely for it's size.

  • I got back from France on Monday night, and up the M20 almost all the other drivers, having also just got back from the continent, were observing proper lane discipline, decent speed and timely observaton. As such it was a very fast and efficient drive back to London.

Then I got to the M25. Fuck's sake there was some appalling driving. Braking from 70 to 60 for gantries that were not switched on, undertaking attempts, sitting in the middle lane, or indeed the outside one, etc. We need some more public service adverts to tell people how to drive.

And don't get me started on that guy in the Jag with cats on his lap :-D

  • Got any plans for the car? I'd love to own either, certainly watched this a few times

  • I have had multiple polos. I used to regularly put two bike bags in with the rear seats folded + other kit stuffed around the outside

  • Moving to NZ in a month's time and looking to get an old (~150K km) Legacy...just 'cos it seems the be the right thing to have there and I've always fancied one. What should I look out for mechanically? Turbo or n/a best at that sort of age? Not too bothered about performance, just something to bung the bikes/kayaks on the roof and get around....

  • Pretty sure you should chat to @IR who I think is there now and just bought the vr4 above. Any old turbo subie will be thrashed but probably fine. Look for wobbly crank pulley, leaky oily left rear head and check for evidence of previous coolant leaks. Also clutches, gearboxes and drive shafts are kind of like fuses so stay away from any with big boost mods.

  • Cool thx...sounds sensible!

Not sure if 17mph is a moving average, but from my experience of driving in SoCal expect a lot of time stuck in traffic on the freeway going nowhere.

It would have to be one of these for me (despite logically not being the best muscle car):

Definitely definitely an auto if you go.

  • Where in NZ are you moving to? I'm out in Marlborough at the moment. With any scooby just make sure the cambelt and waterpump has been done by the 160k km mark, headgaskets are something to look out for on the turbo models too. There are plenty of cheap turbo and non turbo ones out here if you don't mind an automatic. I was torn between b4 legacy and the legnum but I went for the legnum just because they're a little quirky.

  • Clean up the paintwork on the bonnet, probably ditch the shouty BOV and boost gauge as it's got a blitz turbo timer that displays boost. It's got a big old jap cannon on at the moment that looks ugly and is annoyingly quiet so I'll probably ditch that for some shotguns and do a cat delete if it has any (fully legal here). It's plenty fast enough for now so I'm just gonna go through it and do all the routine maintenance.

  • My dad had a mapped, 3" system and hks filtered up Legnum VR4. What a car.

  • lane discipline

This. I hate getting back to within orbit distance of the M25 after being outside a while.
Residing in Spain at the moment and the public broadcast ads for driving etiquette is amazing.
There's people cycling on 70+ mph roads (Stupid, but no signage to say you can't, and they're more like A roads) and people give wide berth and generally courteous all because of TV advertising.

  • Word. France, Italy and Spain are so cool for cycling in that regard. Here is worse than the UK by some margin, fortunately the roads are wider.

Had a little (wearing jeans) play on my new Dunlop q3+ today. Terrific Tyres so far - great feel, grip hard even cold. Recommended!

  • That's interesting.

When I cycled from France down into Spain the change in courtesy towards cyclists was palpable.

But then maybe France is an extreme case of respecting riders.

  • Well it's got a 3" 'zorst and K&N panel filter already, I could definitely get more power with a remap but if I'm quite honest it makes enough power for me at the moment. Spins up the wheels on dry tarmac (not that I'll be doing that again in a hurry).

  • Not a chance. I only just got mine in the back of a four door Golf rental when i took my bike to Crete.

  • Hmm, so we have one "no way" and one "absolutely".

Does anyone have a modern Polo that I could test the luggage capacity of?

  • what about a zipcar?

  • Ah, I didn’t realise someone had answered yes. I would go with there advice then, as I’m only going off my assumption that a polo would be significantly smaller than a golf, and I only just managed to get my evoc bag to lie flat in a golf.

  • I had thought of that, great minds etc, but they're all Golf's - or at least I could not find a Polo.

There's a Europcar in Lewisham, I might give them a ring and see if they have a Polo.

I'm sure they'll be amused at me arriving in an estate car, then moving empty bags from the estate into a Polo whilst scratching my head.

2018 Polo is bigger than this...

  • That's very handy, thanks. There are three of us, we're hiring 2xPolo, so two bike bags in one car, one in the other with the other luggage looks like a goer.

    Thanks all.

  • Just go to car giant. Literally the only thing they are good for is testing out car sizes.
