Gearing is personal. I like low gears, and I agree that the cumulative fatigue means you need lower than normal. I used a compact with an 11-40 cassette.
I used 34x4o a lot, 50x11 a bit but not so much. So I would gear lower rather than higher. For this year I may even put a smaller chainset on
