  • The apple adaptor I have seems to do everything ethernety. Stupid price though.

  • I'm in the market for a new iPad. Should I get a new 9.7 inch one, which is no longer listed as an iPad pro, or is the 10.5 inch iPad pro worth the extra?
    128GB iPad 9.7 listed for £409
    256GB iPad pro 10.5 listed for £769

  • Question 1.:

I have a device that is powered from the mains which is plugged in to a computer via USB and sending a signal acting as a webcam. There shouldn't be any power draw over USB. When I have it plugged in it tells me the USB port is disabled because of a high powered device or something and disconnects (at random after between 5-15 minutes). This is fairly not good for the situation (work) I need the device functioning for. Thoughts on how to make it NOT do this?

    Question 2.:

Is there a very idiot proof way to set up some kind of virtual monitor on a macbook pro that I could convince the computer is an HDMI external monitor? Something that won't slow down my machine to a crawl ideally.

  • Another one - any idea how to get a 1080p signal out of an HDMI cable on a 2015 13" retina mbp? I know they have 16:10 displays but wondering if there's any hackery that will enable true 16:9 : /

  • Basically I need to send a powerpoint over HDMI to a display adapter that ONLY accepts either 1080p25 or 1080p50.

  • Update: This is fucking brilliant. Amazingly configurable. Definitely buying a copy:

  • MBP has died again... Ugh! I'm super broke but have to bite the bullet and get a new machine... Is it easy to upgrade RAM on the new machines? I want a 512Gb drive but it's AU$4099 for the 15" 512Gb SSD 16Gb RAM model... Is that the maximum it can take? I've had 16Gb of RAM on my MBP from new and it's over six years old...

  • Ram is soldered on the new MBPs

  • Fuck those guys!!!

  • Or I could get a used machine and swap the SSD out and add more RAM? Advice please, folks... I haven't been this broke since I was on the rock'n'roll...

What would you do? Best bang for buck...

  • Yes it’s the max. No you can’t upgrade.

  • Creative Cloud, Logic X, bitcoin mining... Spot the odd one out...

  • I’d get the last of the upgrade able MacBook pro’s swap over ssd, and ram if possible. And use that as a stepping stone to splurging big money on the next one.
If you get latest one, usb-c is a ball ache with all the adaptors and miscellaneous cables. Which you’ll need to get to use any of your hard drives, monitors etc that you currently own..

  • Part of me is thinking I should spunk the she cash on a Mac Pro and be done with it... Just have an iPad for out and about, so many decisions...

  • I got an iPad Pro from work to use out and about and gave my gf my MBP in return for her basically giving me her iMac.

Not had many blockers so far. It is a bit more of a pain to get 'obtained' movies and tv shows onto the ipad to watch on journeys but thats about it

  • Can I expand a Mac Pro with my existing SSDs and RAM? I need to check out some benchtests... What's the max RAM on a Mac Pro?

Refurbished store is coming out AU$200 cheaper than my mate's shop discount for a 2.9Ghz 512Gb SSD 16Gb RAM machine... 12 months interest free credit could be the way to go...

  • Yeah but that's such a minefield, your posts kinda put me off! 😉

  • Interest free all the things.

  • Ha, think all my latest hack ones have been positive? My latest build was insanely easy with macOS supporting RX 580 cards. I couldn't bring myself to buy a Mac Pro now knowing they are being redesigned from the ground up atm and launching next year.

Hell, you could actually copy my build and you'd be fine...

  • Also there dual cards in the Mac Pros perform worse than a 580.

  • Wonder if anyone can help, I upgraded from an iphone 5 to an se a year ago and had just shoved my 5 away under the bed.

I pulled it out just now to sell but I can't get it reset.

At first it was giving me loads of messages about 'Cannot Verify Server Identity' and something about mail, I've deleted all my mail accounts off so that's stopped that one but with the phone connected to my home wifi network, if I go on safari I get 'Cannot Verify Server Identity any time I try to load a page.

I tried resetting the phone through 'Setting' but when it asks for the Apple ID password and I enter it correctly (I've reset it on a desktop so I know I'm entering it correctly) it says 'Verification Failed There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server'.

I've turned it off and back on, updated the os, connected to the desktop pc and tried resetting there but it won't do that until I turn off 'Find my Iphone' and to do that I have to enter the Apple ID password and I get the same 'Verification Failed' message again.

I've also tried putting my current sim into it and repeating all that but it makes no difference.

I would also have to enter the Apple ID password to sign out of the whole thing, so it won't let me do that either.

Anyone got any clue what my problem is?

  • When you used your SIM did you shut WiFi down and connect by 3G?

It sounds like network requests over WiFi are being captured by something, like when the WiFi network you are on requires a user name and password entered in to a web page before it will work ‘normally’.

  • When you used your SIM did you shut WiFi down and connect by 3G?

I think I did as that was my intention but now I'm doubting myself however I had been doing the 'Erase all content and settings' and I just tried 'Reset All settings' and it's done something. My screensavers have gone, all my apps are there but I've been signed out, my wifi connections have been forgotten.

Since I'm off the wifi now anyway I'ma bung the sim back in again and see what happens.
