No idea about the battled sump, it is what a few people have mentioned to me to look for when looking at engines, also mentioned running the 1zz sump as that is baffled. These engines don't like any hint of oil starvation. Have you seen pictures of a oil pump that has over revved?
There seem to be issues with the engines burning oil too, few mr2 for sale with that problem. The bore lining can be an issue I have been told.

Surely traditional oil starvation problems caused by g force and problems caused by over-revving are for entirely different reasons?
If you mis-shift and it jumps over the limiter, you're going to have problems with most engines in some way or another.
Like I said, over the course of running Elises and Exiges a few years back I had no problems with oil starvation but maybe I wasn't trying hard enough. Lotus did offer an accusump system as an option which seemed to be pretty popular for people that were using their cars for a lot of track work and were running A048's/R888's or slicks.
I've done tonnes of trackdays in the past with Elises and Exige using the 2ZZ-GE engine and I never noticed any problems with the lack of a baffled sump. Is it just a problem when you downshift and jump over the limiter? If so then it's understandable that something is going to let go.
